I’ll share today a few photos of Helsinki-Malmi Airport.
The beautiful and extravagant round terminal represents pure functionalism
and was designed by architects Dag Englund and Vera Rosendahl. Malmi Airport
was opened solemnly in 1938. Until the opening of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in 1952
it was the main airport of not only Helsinki but also Finland.
Today, the airport is still actively used in general aviation and flight training.
For a long time, the City of Helsinki has had plans to close the airport to use the area for
construction of new residential zones, but that decision has been debated and deferred
for many years. According to preliminary plans the round terminal would be conserved
but the airplane field would host new residential buildings.
My intention was to go and see National Aerobatic Championships at Malmi Airport
this weekend, but I arrived a few minutes too late. So no show for me,
but having a cup of coffee up in the restaurant was a nice experience.

...it pays to be early!
VastaaPoistaIt happened that the crown prince of Japan, Akihito with his spouse was visiting the neighbourhood. It caused a terrible traffic jam :)
PoistaInteressante e aproveito para desejar um bom fim-de-semana à minha amiga.

PoistaHieno paikka! Minusta saisivat jättää kentän rakentamatta
VastaaPoistaValtavan upea tuo pyöreä funkis-terminaali!
PoistaInteresante información. Un beso.
VastaaPoistaFeliz domingo Teresa.
PoistaVieläkö tämä on hengissä? Kiitos tietojeni päivittämisestä.
VastaaPoistaAina ei ennätä <3
Ei ennätä, ei :)
PoistaThat airport design looks very avant-garde for 1938! Sorry you missed the show. I hope your weekend is going well.
VastaaPoistaThe terminal is very beautiful and worth of conserving. Helsinki expands, of course it would create a great & historical residential aerea. We'll see.
PoistaMit Interesse habe ich heute die Bilder angeschaut. Denn meine Tochter ist momentan in Helsinki für einige Tage.
VastaaPoistaLiebe Grüße von Ingrid
As so Ingrid!
PoistaDear riitta,
VastaaPoistathis circular building is unusual for an airport building. But I like it very much.
An airport is also interesting without an extra show, just because of the many different travellers.
Have a nice Sunday and love greetings
