The best place in the world to paint presented artist community in Önningeby, Åland

Collegiality between artists began in France and developed into a versatile international phenomenon during the 1870s. A colony of Finnish and Swedish artists emerged in Önningeby, Åland, during the summers at the end of the 19th century. Önningeby's artist community has often emerged when reading artist biographies. Last summer, I read about Elin Danielson-Gambogi, who was a frequent visitor in Önningeby. Here I show you some of her works. She married Italian painter Raffaello Cambogi and lived the rest of her life in Italy.

I was interested especially of the art of Elin Danielson-Gambogi and her and Dora Wahlroos' wild triangle drama. It happened that Dora, who had come to visit Elin in Italy fell in love with Raffaello, Elin's husband. The sharp fictional correspondence about this drama was fantastic reading in a recent Finnish novel.

To my delight, several works by Danielson-Gambogi were on display. 

This large size portrait of Hanna Westerholm was gorgeous. 

The hair was like living human hair!

Pre-Colombian Art, Didrichsen Art Museum

Mr. Gunnar Didrichsen was a successful & wealthy businessman in the field of techno-chemistry & import. He was the CEO of Transmeri for 60 years and travelled a lot. During his travels he collected an extensive collection of Chinese, Persian and pre-Columbian objects.

Pre-Columbian art refers to the Mexican, Central American, and Andean territories from about 2000 BC to 1500 AD. The collection of the Didrichsen Art Museum is the only public collection of pre-Columbian cultures in Finland. 

I took photos of these wonderful objects, but don’t dare to say anything about their origin,

Asian or Pre-Columbian. Some faces were so cute and smiling, maybe they are ancient gods?

The objects were displayed in the basement of the museum behind glass.

Modern Jewellery à la Cranach

I told you about Lucas Cranach exhibition HERE. Modern jewellery à la Cranach was part of the exhibition, designed by contemporary German artists in 2015. It was the year of the 500th anniversary of the birth of Lucas Cranach the Younger and the Saxony-Anhalt Arts Foundation arranged a competition. The exhibition of these amazing & imaginary works was shown in 2015-16 at three museums in Germany - and now I could see them in Helsinki! There were big posters with beautiful young girls and the jewellery was under glass.

Pieces of jewellery play a key role in Cranach’s works. They emphasize a woman’s status and beauty, often being nude beauties’ only accessory. The items painted by Cranach generally represented the fashion of the Wittenberg court.

Renessaince Beauties by Lucas Cranach

Renaissance Beauties is the first solo exhibition in Finland on the oeuvre of the great German Renaissance master Lucas Cranach the Elder. The works on display include paintings and prints from the collections of European museums. The above two  works are the only works by Cranach in Finland, both in the collection of the Sinebrychoff Art Museum. They represent popular themes in the artist’s oeuvre: female portraits and beauties, both rendered in a personal and recognizable style.

Lucas Cranach the Elder (1472-1553) established a successful and lucrative studio in Wittenberg, known for some 5,000 paintings. In addition to numerous altarpieces and allegorical paintings, Cranach is known for his elaborate portraits, numerous versions of close friend Martin Luther. Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515-1586) continued the studio after his father’s death. His style of painting is so similar to that of his father that it is sometimes difficult to distinguish their work.

Cranach’s fascinating and enigmatic paintings have spoken to artists over the ages. Among the best-known examples are probably the interpretations by Picasso.  A present-day perspective on the handsome jewellery depicted in Cranach’s works is offered by a number of impressive items created by German jewellery artists. because she seems a bit unhappy to me!

Cranach was a German painter and printmaker, born in Germany and having studied in Vienna. He was active in the town of Wittenberg where he spent most of his career as a court painter to the Saxon electors. His work includes many fine religious examples and several portraits of Martin Luther, although he also painted secular subjects. Besides being one of the greatest German painters of his time, Cranach was also widely known for his woodcuts, some of which illustrated the first German printing of the New Testament.

Cranach learned the art of drawing from his father and would pass this on to his own son, Lucas Cranach the Younger (1515 – 1586). Cranach the Elder’s chief occupation was that of portrait painting, where he preserved the features of all the German Reformers and their princely adherents. - The Uffizi

Helene Schjerfbeck at Ateneum

Through my travels I found myself describes how a talented art student grew into one of the most influential artists in our history. An exhibition of works by Helene Schjerfbeck (1862–1946) was shown at the Royal Academy of Arts in London in the autumn of 2019. The exhibition was the first comprehensive overview of Schjerfbeck’s work in the UK. The exhibition that Finns get to see at the Ateneum will be more than twice the size of the one staged in London.  The Guardian called her 'Finland’s Munch’ and  said that 'Her self-portraits put her in the company of Goya, Rembrandt, Francis Bacon and Lucian Freud’.

Schjerfbeck is my favourite female Finnish painter. She was so, so talented and already at the age of eleven permitted to study at Finnish Art Society’s drawing school in Helsinki together with adult art students. At the age of 18 she traveled to Paris for the first time and in later years again to Paris, Brittany, St. Ives & Fiesole. Her paintings in the early years of her carer were naturalistic, but then she developed a unique style: very modern and with subdued color palette. Her series of self portraits ar brilliant through the years.

I have to say that i was in heaven. Schjerbeck’s art pleads me deeply and I shall pay a return visit later in January. My photos are of course only a pale picture how fabulous the paintings were live. But I wanted to show you one of my favourites.

than most written English carols, and can be traced to the time of the Norman conquests 
of 1066 A.D. In the Middle Ages, wassailing was a means for the feudal peasants 
who lived on the land of their lord to be invited to the lord's manor 
and to dine and drink together and enjoy the bounty of his table.
