Winter vs Summer

The good news is that this massive amount of snow is almost totally gone!
But lets compare some winter vs summer views of my garden.

We got a LOT of snow this winter. There were a few days of snow chaos in January and February. At the end of January the Valtteri storm with strong winds and heavy snowfall brought over 40 cm of new snow and a week later again we got 30 cm of new snow. There have been lesser snowfalls in March and even in April and the winter has seemed endless. I think these February photos give you the idea of the Finnish winter reality.

The first photo shows the outdoor stairs that we don’t use at all in the winter.
This beautiful pink Atragene Constance is growing along the roof ladders.
Don’t know why it did not drop its leaves.

I got this Pterocarya rhoifolia at a plant swap as a 40 cm high young plant.
It has grown beautifully and also started to bloom.

My garden Singer hosts different annuals each year combined with
lime Lysimachia mummularia.

Along this small pergola structure there are growing
Parthenocissus and lime Humulus lupulus.

The same plants also decorate these garden arches.

I have a few towers like this constructed by myself.
Sad to say that this Clematis alpina has not lately been blooming this abundantly.

Around our terrace we have trellis and the Clematis Negritjanka
is every summer just gorgeous.

Longing so badly for the spring, apple blossoms and lilacs.

Wishing a good & sunny weekend!

February Thoughts

Kindness is like snow—it beautifies everything it covers.
- Kahlil Gibran

In Southern Finland February started with frost & thick snow blanket. The trees are covered with snow and look very decorative to me. Yesterday it was around minus 8 C and I enjoyed the sunshine and pure snow and took a few photos during my walk in the neighbourhood. The above tree is probably Aesculus hippocastanum and underneath Salix fragilis ’Bullata’.

The beginning of February is also the time of the traditional Runeberg pastries. They are sweet and rich in calories, but taste oh so good! On top there is an icing sugar round with rasperry jam and the pastry is flavoured with rum. The name comes after our national poet Johan Ludvig Runeberg (1804-1877), whose birthday is celebrated the 5th of February. According to the history his wife Fredrica used to bake them and today every commercial bakery has their own secret recipe. HERE one recipe in English.

I wonder if the snow loves the trees and fields, that it kisses them so gently?
And then it covers them up snug, you know, with a white quilt; and perhaps it says,
go to sleep, darlings, till the summer comes again.
- Lewis Carrol

I pray this winter be gentle and kind—a season of rest from the wheel of the mind.
- John Geddes

There is an elementary school nearby and I photographed
these sweet girls on the empty street.

In the depth of winter, I finally learned that there was in me an invincible summer.
- Albert Camus

Well, I love summer more than winter, there is no doubt about that!
Wishing you bright winter days.

Ahead of the Valtteri Storm

My garden looked this morning a pieceful Winter Wonderland. But as I am writing this at noon, the winds are already rising. Finland will be hit by the worst snowstorm of the winter on Saturday. The Valtteri storm with strong winds will disturb the traffic conditions seriously. It can snow here in Uusimaa / Helsinki area 30-40 centimeters and the temperature fluctuates near zero. The plowing equipment is not able to clean roads and streets very quickly.  I read on the news that there are storms elsewhere in Europe and the United States, too.

I don’t have to go grocery shopping, so I’ll stay warm and cosy inside. I’ll tell later how the storm affected my area. Obviously it will take a long, long time until the first snowdrops appear!

UPDATE on Mondy morning:
Over 40 cm new snow, no damages at my place, everything is fine.
Sending warm winter wishes over to you.

In the Winter Sun

Today we have a SPLENDID winter day. The sky is clear and the sun is shining.
This happiness is supposed to turn into snowing tomorrow and the temperature of - 7 C
into plus grades on Friday. But as long as this bliss continues, I’ll enjoy!

Wishing beautiful winter days!

Friday Bliss #122 - Snow Chaos & Winter Wonderland

On Tuesday and Wednesday we had a real snow chaos all over the country.
In the Helsinki region we got approximately 40-50 cm new snow. It was terrible,
the traffic in chaos and cars buried in snow. Me & hubby spent hours on the yard shoveling,
three times a day. By yesterday the snowfall was fortunately over and we had
blue sky and sunshine with -13 C. In short a stunning winter day!

Wishing a sunny weekend!
