Ballet Dancer in a Bright Red Skirt

This week’s weather has been a real treat: full sun and almost 30 C! So it has been a happy week.

It seems that everything is starting to bloom all at once, a joy to watch!

...

Maybe I’ll present you this bright red beauty.

It’s hard to count how many layers this dancer has in her dancing dress!

Papaver orientale ’Olympia’ has not exactly my favourite colour and it’s stem is very curvy.

In my last post I said that it is at its best in bud, looking like this.

But then she spread her skirt, and pretty she is!

A disadvantage is that it does not exactly match the purple alliums, that bloom at the same time.

I don’t let this papaver seed, but it pops up here and there every summer.

This one happens to be a very beautiful specimen, not lying on the ground as they do often!

So I’ll let her bloom.

Then I succeeded in photographing the first butterfly of the summer.

I think it is Vanessa cardui - Ohdakeperhonen.

I just love this part of Swan Lake!

In the garden a lot is happening this week. If this is not happiness, what is?

Pretty Nuisances in the Jungle

Because I was not able to restrain the spreading of my plants last summer,

among others these grow pretty wild today. In addition everything grows in the lap of the other,

so in the autumn there shall be a lot of dividing & replanting & donating!

Centaurea montana pops up everywhere! Of course it is pretty and blue resembling a cornflower.

The white version is more beautiful in my opinion and maybe not spreads as eagerly.

Geranium phaeum is the worst of all! I have got one plant in a swap but today

it grows everywhere! Usually I cut it down after blooming, trying to avoid seeding.

A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill

except for learning how to grow in rows.

Phalaris arundinacea has had tens of growing places through the years.

Now it grows limited to bedrock and can’t run anymore.

Then there is this Papaver orientale ’Olympia’ that does not exactly match the colours

of purple alliums! I got its seeds years ago and it is impossible to get rid of it in unwanted places.

The good thing is, that the blooming time is short. It’s at its best in bud.

Too many different plants per square metre! Mostly spread or seeded there by themselves.

So true. It is constant weeding and keeping in check

the plant's tenacious & vigorous will to spread and seed!

Papaver orientale 'Olympia'

I put these Papaver orientale 'Olympia' to have a nap or beauty sleep. Their stems are so curvy and they self sow in such odd places that it was difficult to photograph them on their growing spot. A WARNING is in order: you'll never get rid of these once you have planted them in your garden! A couple of links: Wikipedia & Two previous posts of Olympia.

Sleeping Beauties - Prinsessa Ruususia

In Finland plants are having their long beauty sleep under the snow.

So great that they don't sleep a hundred years as Sleeping Beauty in the fairy tale!

Yet no sign of spring - but there they are!

In Finnland haben die Pflanzen ihren langen Schönheitsschlaf unter dem Schnee.

So toll, dass sie nicht hundert Jahre als Dornröschen im Märchen schlafen!

Noch kein Frühlingszeichen - aber da sind sie!

a Sleeping Beauty & a pretty Ballet Dancer in the same person!

Ich denke, dieser Papaver Orientale "Olympia" ist beides -

ein Dornröschen & ein hübscher Balletttänzer in der gleichen Person!

Floral Bliss #46

The summer has gone, grey & rainy early winter is here.
So I thought to share with you some bright summer memories from June.

Pure red is not my favourite color. Maybe the only bloom in this shade in my garden
is Papaver orientale. This 'Olympia' has funny curvy stems and it is impossible to get rid of it.
I have tried, many times but there it is: growing among my pink peonies!
Not a very good color combination, but what can I do!
