Life Under Threat / Sinebrychoff Art Museum

I have not yet shared with you these photos from my art museum visit in February - no one knows when the museums shall open their doors again. The exhibition was about animals & nature. The pandemic had not yet exploded in Europe and the USA, now human lives are threatened, too. 

"The exhibition presents visions of animals and nature from the 16th century to today. The artworks convey the relationship humans have had with animals and with nature through the ages. In the western worldview, animals and nature are viewed as something that exists for humans. In reality, humans are merely a part of the whole. Understanding co-existence helps to preserve living space both for humans and for all other creatures." 

I liked the fact that the exhibition featured both newer and older art and many styles. My own favorites were eg. Akseli Gallén-Kallela’s series of small landscapes and the mysterious plant painting of Hjalmar Munsterhjelm. I’ll share some paintings, unfortunately I don’t know the names of all the artists.

Once Upon A Time - Sinkka Art Museum

ONCE UPON A TIME - Collection of Aune Laaksonen Art Foundation

I visit the center of Kerava - half an hour from the center of Helsinki - every now and then, but never went to Sinkka before. Now this art museum presents a fabulous collection of contemporary & modern Finnish art. The exhibition was wonderful! First of all, the museum's facilities are light, modern and diverse, perfectly suited to contemporary art.  I was fascinated by the fact that there were very different types of work involved: big and colorful oil paintings and smaller black and white graphics. Numerous sculptures also added their own charm to the atmosphere of the exhibition. Here some photos for you. Unfortunately I don’t know all the artists’ names.

Kuutti Lavonen - Tricolore 1

There were several works by Lavonen in the exhibition, including colorful Andy Warhol-style
paintings and collages based on a photograph. One topic was James Dean.

Hannu Väisänen - Passion tree

The yellow stone by Ulla Rantanen had a wonderful & mystic shine;
the big metallic oval statue was called Shield of Earth.

This funny guy was called Seaman on Land

Tero Laaksonen - Il moro di Venezia

A touch of Easter: This large installation explores big and small: How inmense are our  feelings 

in relation to our  human size! A giant nest of giant eggs brought to my mind a story of HG Wells: 

Aepyornis Island. It was a giant bird living in Madagascar, now in extinction.

Edelfelt & The Romanovs at Sinebrychoff Art Museum

Albert Edelfelt and The Romanovs at The Sinebrychoff Art Museum's atmospheric brick cellar is a small exhibition, but definitely worth a look. The exhibition focuses on Albert Edelfelt’s (1854–1905) lesser-known works related to the Russian Imperial family and includes oil paintings, sketches and letters from the artist. This exhibition was on display in St. Petersburg in the autumn 2019. Finland was in Edelfelt’s time the Grand Duchy of Finland of the Russian Empire, and the Imperial court opened its doors to Edelfelt, already a renowned master. Albert Edelfelt is known for his naturalistic style and Realist approach to art. He traveled to Italy, France, England, Spain, Sweden, Denmark and Russia. 

For me, the best experience was to see Bertha and Capi from 1881. 

The size of the painting is pretty small, but the light glows and Bertha's pink ruffle dress 

is masterfully depicted. The painting has a charming & light summer atmosphere.

Edelfelt was handsome and loved by women. He was married but the marriage was not happy and he spent decades in Paris. His life has inspired many non-fiction and fiction writers. In my posts there are displayed some Edelfelt’s paintings: Venla Hiidensalo - Because of you / Anna Kortelainen - Virginie (Virginie was Edelfelt's model & mistress and it is rumoured that they had two children together) / Anna Kortelainen - Wild Garden, presents Edelfelt's Haikko, a villa on the sea where he spent his summers.

This painting, long thought to be lost, is being shown for the first time in Finland.

Artists at Önningeby, Åland

The best place in the world to paint presented artist community in Önningeby, Åland

Collegiality between artists began in France and developed into a versatile international phenomenon during the 1870s. A colony of Finnish and Swedish artists emerged in Önningeby, Åland, during the summers at the end of the 19th century. Önningeby's artist community has often emerged when reading artist biographies. Last summer, I read about Elin Danielson-Gambogi, who was a frequent visitor in Önningeby. Here I show you some of her works. She married Italian painter Raffaello Cambogi and lived the rest of her life in Italy.

I was interested especially of the art of Elin Danielson-Gambogi and her and Dora Wahlroos' wild triangle drama. It happened that Dora, who had come to visit Elin in Italy fell in love with Raffaello, Elin's husband. The sharp fictional correspondence about this drama was fantastic reading in a recent Finnish novel.

To my delight, several works by Danielson-Gambogi were on display. 

This large size portrait of Hanna Westerholm was gorgeous. 

The hair was like living human hair!

Pre-Colombian Art, Didrichsen Art Museum

Mr. Gunnar Didrichsen was a successful & wealthy businessman in the field of techno-chemistry & import. He was the CEO of Transmeri for 60 years and travelled a lot. During his travels he collected an extensive collection of Chinese, Persian and pre-Columbian objects.

Pre-Columbian art refers to the Mexican, Central American, and Andean territories from about 2000 BC to 1500 AD. The collection of the Didrichsen Art Museum is the only public collection of pre-Columbian cultures in Finland. 

I took photos of these wonderful objects, but don’t dare to say anything about their origin,

Asian or Pre-Columbian. Some faces were so cute and smiling, maybe they are ancient gods?

The objects were displayed in the basement of the museum behind glass.
