Book Piles

The theme of Makrotex this week is PILE. I started to read in Spanish a few years ago
with Agatha Christie’s detective stories. I have swapped away many of my first Spanish books
but these eleven Agatha Christie's books are still on my shelf.
Agatha Christie's first book The Mysterious Affair at Styles was published in 1920.
I read the book last summer to honor the 100th anniversary of this great writer.

For Jutta’s Digitalart Dienstag an edit from the above photo.

I sometimes photograph book piles. Here one from this January.

Digitalart Dienstag

I listen a lot of audiobooks and publish reviews on my book blog.
I don’t like to publish only the publisher's book cover, instead try to make a background
that suits the novel. Tritone is a musical intervall. The novel Tritonus by Kjell Westö
tells about music & a conductor. My original is the last photo, a free photo from Pixa Bay.

Friday Bliss #114 - November Flower

In winter time I usually have a flowering pot plant or two to bring joy to the everyday life.
November cactus or Christmas cactus? No idea, but Schlumbergera it is
and in white my favourite. I have one recently bought hanging in my kitchen
and another from last year in my utility room.

Recently I have read a couple of interesting books.
Selja Ahava's wonderful Woman who loved insects is a fiction based on the life of
German born Maria Sibylla Merian (1647-1717).  The writer’s magical realism lets Maria
live for 370 years and this way how our life and worldview have changed through the centuries.
Merian’s drawings are amazing!

Then I read Deutsches Haus by German Anette Hess, also a brilliant novel telling about
the so called Auschwitz trials in Frankfurt in the mid 1960s.

How to Survive November

November is one of the toughest months in Finland: dark, windy & rainy.
My blogfriend Lepis from the blog Parallel Lines has had this How to Survive November
challenge for many years. This year it is black & white.
The post may include photos, drawings, music, DIY works etc.

I started with a black & white version of this photo and
for Jutta’s Digitalart Dienstag manipulated it a bit.

Friday Bliss #111 - A Book & a Memory

This weekend Ill spend a lot of time listening to the Helsinki Book Fair, online.
Recently I read a novel Finnjet, My Love and it brought memories to my mind.
GTS Finnjet  was built at Wärtsilä Shipyard in Helsinki 1977. It was the world’s
biggest and fastest cruiseferry at the time and sailed from Helsinki to Travemünde, Germany.
There was space for 1500 passengers and 350 cars.
Plot summary: Three welders  / three musqeteers who worked at the shipyard in the 70s
fly to India in 2008 to wittness the demolition of the Finnjet in Alang.
Great description of a friendship that has not always been so smooth.

Ferry trips to Sweden, Estonia and Germany are very popular among the Finns.  There are
many companies - Vikingline, Tallink-Silja, Finnlines... I am not so fond of cruises
but have sailed to Stockholm & Tallinn and once to Germany. As teenager I sailed with
M/S Finnpartner to Travemünde and spent the summer in Grosshansdorf, a small town
near Hamburg and stayed at the home of the sweet Weingardt family. It was a HOT summer!
visited the Hamburg Zoo and probably also the Ahrensburg castle.

Photo underneath: GTS Finnjet in Helsinki, the Finnish Wikipedia.

My simple calluna plantings look like this. The variegted ivy is fake,
but I thought it adds a bit of light to the plantings.

Hobby - Reading

Satu Vasantola - Kaikki kadonneet  / All Those Lost

One of my hobbies is reading and I write reviews at my book blog Kirja vieköön!
So far in October I have read mostly new releases by Finnish writers. Many bookstagrammers
publish very elaborate photos, I prefer to focus on the cover. Accessories are often florals.

Pirjo Toivanen - Siskoni Italiassa  / My Sister in Italy

Hannimari Heino, Kristiina Wallin - Matkakirjeitä / Travel Letters

The only international writer is Pulitzer Prize winner Jhumpa Lahiri, who has Indian roots,
grew in The US and lives now in Rome - and writes in Italian!
I have loved her previous books, but this made me a bit embarassed.

Jhumpa Lahiri - Dove mi trovo / Where I Find Myself / Missä milloinkin

Friday Bliss #109 - Cosy Times, Play Times

I am book blogger as well and the autumn feels like Christmas
- so many newly released books! I have made a lookalike of me in dollhouse size 1:12.
She is thrilled with all the books, but wonders where to find time to read!
At the moment my readings are mainly Finnish literature and
The Helsinki Book Fair shall be only online at the end of October.

World Animal Day was celebrated last Sunday, October 4 which is the feast day of
Francis of Assisithe patron saint of animals. The whole week is dedicated to the welfare of animals.
SEY, Animal Welfare Finland says there is an ongoing cat crisis in Finland.
They estimate that at least 20,000 cats are abandoned in our country each year.
Many families take a ’summer cat’ for their kids when they stay at their summer cottages
the summer months. In the autumn many a cat is abandoned in the nature.
SEY has publishd a leaflet Valuable Cat for the kids aiming to raise the cat’s value.
For me this kind of conduct is totally incomprehensible.

Now that our renovation is over, Sissi goes to sofa to sofa to sleep and relax.
She took this messy time well but is now happy & so content. We bought her a new climbing tree
to the living room - from high up it is good to keep an eye what is going on.

Cosy weekend to you, too!

Enchanting Scent of Early June ❤︎

Lilies-of-the-valley are so small but their scent is so wonderful, as perfume.
This modest wild flower is also Finland’s national flower and loved by all Finns.
Photographed for Makrotex / Small.

For my Finnish readers I warmly recommend this brand new book - Eeva!
It is an illustrated children or YA book telling about the beloved writer & poet Eeva Kilpi.

Going to sleep, I think:
Tomorrow I will heat up the sauna,
Pamper myself,
Walk, swim, wash,
Invite myself for a cup of tea in the evening,
Talk to myself in a friendly and admiring way, praising:
You brave little woman,
I believe in you.
- Eeva Kilpi, my translation

Nukkumaan käydessä ajattelen:
Huomenna minä lämmitän saunan,
pidän itseäni hyvänä,
kävelytän, uitan, pesen,
kutsun itseni iltateelle,
puhuttelen ystävällisesti ja ihaillen, kehun:
Sinä pieni urhea nainen,
minä luotan sinuun.
- Eeva Kilpi

Legendary Cats And Their Humans - Book Review

Legendary Cats and Their Humans by the Germans Andreas Schlieper and Heike Reinecke is a fun book that is sure to be an entertaining reading for every cat lover. The writers have included thirty famous people who have been more or less crazy about their cats. Writers have depicted cats in their works and artists in their art. Gallery of the persons is so versatile that anyone can find a celebrity of interest. Among the authors are e.g. Haruki Murakami, Ernest Hemingway, Herman Hesse, T. S. Eliot, Patricia Highsmith, Charles Bukowski and Doris Lessing; artists e.g. Frida Kahlo, Paul Klee and Franz Marc. Of course, there are many other famous names involved: Winston Churchill, Isaac Newton, and the afterwords still list great many cat lovers that didn’t fit in the book.

The chapters in the book are structured so that the reader gets information about the person’s love  of cats and at the same time a brief overview of his or her life. There are a lot of quotes and they bring the person closer. One could say that Hemingway’s cat madness went a bit over board. He had up to sixty cats and he built an own residential tower for them in his Cuban finca. Hemingway bred multi-toed or polydactic cats. Today, Hemingway’s home in Key West, The US is open to the public and forty cats still live there!

Paul Klee: Cat and Bird 1928, MOMA

Personally, I wanted to explore more about artists who loved cats. One of them is the German Franz Marc (1880-1916), who founded the group Der Blaue Reiter. He is famous for his blue horses and other animals described in a colorful and cubist way. The German-Swiss Paul Klee (1879-1940) was also one of the blue riders. His view of the cat is funny: the idea of birds fills the cat’s entire brain! Based on my observations on Sissi, this is definitely true!

In Western symbolism, the black cat foretells evil, it literally represents evil, the devil, death, or at least uncontrollable lust. In the Middle Ages, the black cat was considered a companion to witches, and many still feel awkward when a black cat crosses the road - especially if it runs from left to right.

Frida Kahlo: Self-portrait with a thorn collar 1940

I did not know that the father of Frida Kahlo (1907-1954) was German. In one of Kahlo’s symbolist self-portraits, a monkey and a black cat sit on the artist’s shoulders. The black cat in Mexico is also an amulet of love that brings good luck. There are various interpretations of the butterflies flying around Kahlo's head - they have been thought to symbolize change or, in the Christian sense, even the resurrection or the soul of Aztec culture.

I didn’t even remember that in the film loosely based on a work by Truman Capote (1924-1984), Breakfast at Tiffany's appeared an orange tomcat. In the film, it is anonymous, but in real life, the cat was played by Orangey, the cat star of many other films, too. Orangey was awarded the PATSY Award in 1962 - Picture Animal Top Star of the Year. In this Youtube link, Audrey Hepburn hugs the wet Orangey. He is said to have done his job very professionally: he remained in the scene even after the filming lasted for hours, but left the studio as soon as they ended.

Here are a few highlights from this fun book. Personally, I learned a lot and had fun! The book is not yet available in English as far as I found out.
