Friday Bliss #199 - Bloomers of the Week

Hello dear blog friends,
Sorry for visiting your last week’s links so late. The reason is that I have been busy with
many summer & garden projects, visitors & gettogethers. I’ll try to be more prompt this week.
It has been hot and very dry, watering necessary every evening.
But now that my husband bought himself a new TOY - i.e. a good sprinkler,
he has taken the responsibility of watering - and that is great.
Have you noticed that men always need new toys in order to get
enthusiastic at any household jobs? That is the case at least in my family.
Yesterday we got a bit of rain and I felt blessed. So funny that one can rejoice of rain!
In the garden pink & white theme continues. First two unknown peony varieties.

Spiraea japonica ’Odensala’ blooms in fluffy pink.
This shrub spreads eagerly and out of 2-3 shrubs I have got tens of them.

Clematis recta ’Atropurpurea’ looked fantastic this year!
It grows shrub-like and needs a support, preferably some shrub.
Here it covers a structure of rebar network.
But then came a disaster in form of a strong wind and many of the delicate stems got broken.

Pink Lilium martagon blooms in many places.
Here in a flower bed with Gillenia trifoliata.

There is a hint of blue as well - campanulas are in bloom.
Probably this wonderful lilac Campanula latifolia is a crossbreed of blue and white.

I made a casual bouquet with Campanula persicifolia and stormtorn Clematis recta.
It looked airy, as picked up on a summer meadow.

Wishing you wonderful & sunny July days!

A Sunny Day for a Change!

I have been complaining about the July weather in Finland. Today was a gorgeous day, but pouring rain & strong winds returns tomorrow. I have been out in the garden the entire day. One bright side of gardening are the abundant materials for bouquets. I made a joyful mixed bouquet of what was growing here and there.

A simple coffee break with salty biscuits was so needed!

It is Campanula time as you can see. The light was not the best possible but I love
white Campanula latifolia. The blooming could last a bit longer.

Wishing you a sunny & pleasant weekend!

Friday Bliss #8

If months were marked by colors,
November in New England - and in Finland! - would be colored gray.
- Madeleine M. Kunin

This November there seems to be nothing to say.
- Anne Sexton
...
As you can see from the above quotes autumn darkness has landed in Finland
and the lack of daylight starts to have its effect on my mood :)
It is definitely the time to start to use my Beurer daylight therapy lamp.
It really helps to overcome this fatigue!

November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.
- Clyde Watson

Wishing you a blessed All Saints’ Day! - Rauhaisaa pyhäinpäivää!

Delicate Bellflowers - Herkkiä kellokukkia

Kellokukat puutarhassakin tuovat mieleen lapsuuden kukkaniityt.
...
Bellflowers in the garden remind me of sunny days & flowering meadows of my childhood. Some sources say this Campanula trachelium is demanding & needs good soil. But in my garden they thrive in dry & rocky moraine. The first ones I grew from seed; after that they have self sown abundantly,. This summer only a few white ones are blooming. Campanula trachelium is called Our Lady's Bells, Coventry Bells and also nettle-leaved bellflower because its leaves resemble those of a nettle.

Giant Bellflowers in White

Ukonkellon komea kukinta kestää hyvin lyhyen aikaa.

Campanula latifolia - the giant bellflower, is a species of bellflower in the family Campanulaceae. It is also known as the large campanula and the wide-leaved bellflower. It is native to Europe and western Asia and is widely grown as an ornamental plant.
Its blooming time is very short. I like best the white variety because I think that its blooming is a bit longer than the blooming of the blue variety. Usually I cut the stems after blooming while this plant self sows eagerly.

A cross of blue & white? - Sinisen ja valkoisen risteymä?

Joys of Summer - Kesän iloja

BRIGHT JOYS OF SUMMER - BOUQUETS
Everybody knows Sissinghurst Castle Garden (photos!) and it's white garden where
even white Chamaenerion angustifolium are allowed to grow.
I don't know how they manage there, but in my garden this plant runs & runs.
Therefore here no striking growing areas, a few plants here and there.
I should have limited the growing area to keep all the running roots there - not done.
...

My bouquet consists of  Chamaenerion angustifolium & Campanula latifolia in white;
Campanula trachelium in blue, Stachys micrantha &
purple Lychnis coronaria, also a bit of Aruncus dioicus.
...
Kimpussani on maitohorsmaa, valkoista ukonkelloa, sinistä varsankelloa,
jalopähkämöä, harmaakäenkukkaa ja töyhtöangervoa.

GREEN JOYS OF SUMMER - HERBS
The first harvest of herbs put into freezer: 3 varieties of basil, French dragoon & chive!
I did not count the boxes but they were many.

Joyful weekend! - Iloista viikonloppua!
