The Venetians - Venetsialaiset

The Finnish people have over half a million summer cottages and a lot of boats. Every year the last weekend of August means party - The Venetians - The Venetziad. This is the time to celebrate the end of the summer and boating season, shut the summer cottages and put the boats to shelter. This tradition is very strong on the western coast of Finland on the shores of the Gulf of Bothnia. There is good food, maybe a crayfish party, gathering of friends, candles on the shore and fireworks.

I come from the southeastern part of the country, from Imatra but live now in the Helsinki region. So this tradition is unknown to me, but slowly it is spreading to the whole country. You can enlarge the map and see the cities.

My partying was very modest. I don’t have a summer cottage any more, so no sea shore for me. But good food oh yes. And I sent my husband to buy some autumn chrysanthemums and this is what he came home with: tiny, tiny plants that are intended to inside the house! But have to give him credit: he planted them himself.
