Gumbostrand Konst & Form

Gumbostrand Konst & Form is an art center founded in 2012, which includes

an art gallery, a design shop and a bistro focusing on classic Scandinavian flavors.

The entity was established in K. Hartwall's old factory environment, where bottle caps were 

reportedly made earlier. Konst & Form enjoys a scenic location by the sea

in Sipoo’s Gumbostrand. The ocean views were stunning. Unfortunately, I didn’t have time 

to take landscape photos (kids involved!), but I want to go there again to admire.

The space was nicely renovated, high and spacious. I especially liked Anu Penttinen's

colorful and imaginative glass objects.

Marja Hepo-aho's Gumbo fox was so cute and available in different colors. 

Tuomo Saali's Maa-ilma / The World was amazing. There is a play of words as in Finnish 

the world is maailma. If you split it in two syllables as maa-ilma it says earth-air.

These Wonderful July Days

Grandson Kalle celebrated his 17th birthday and it was a wonderful reason to drive

to Sipoo and have lunch in a beautiful countryside setting. Ravintola Tila / Restaurant Homestead 

offered delicious food - for most of us salmon - in shadow of big trees and in company of 

hens and great looking roosters and domestic ducks.

There is a new main building for visitors’ meeting uses and for the winter season. The view 

from the terrace is wide open. Sipoonkorpi National Park is right there.

We enjoyed the hot summer day and the company of each other.

Old Church & Plague Park

Vanhakirkko Park, also known as Ruttopuisto Park, is located in the center of Helsinki. The name Ruttopuisto comes from the fact that on the spot there used to be a cemetery where victims of the 1710 plague epidemic were buried. In summer, the park is lush and cozy, now of course bare and wintery. In Vanhakirkko Park people spend time among the tombstones as in any park. With the exception of the soldiers killed in the civil war in Finland and Estonia, no people have been buried in the park since 1829. 48 tombstones from 1790 - 1829 are preserved in the park.

The park is home to Vanhakirkko = Old Church, which was inaugurated in 1826 

and is the second oldest church in Helsinki. The architect was German Carl Ludwig Engel.

In Vanhakirkko Park there is a mass grave & memorial of German soldiers who fell in Helsinki in April 1918. The monument was designed by sculptor Gunnar Finne and architect Johan S. Sirén and was unveiled in 1920. In front of the black stone pavement is a relief depicting a kneeling young man and German texts. "Den in Kampf um Helsingfors im April 1918 gefallenen Deutschen Helden Errichtete Diesmal die dankbare Stadt”.

The church is beautiful inside and has about 1,200 seats.

Bear in the Finnish Mythology

Ein Bär bewacht auch das Finnische Nationalmuseum in Helsinki.

A bear also guards the National Museum of Finland in Helsinki.

Karhu - Der Bär ist Finnlands Nationaltier und spielt eine wichtige Rolle in der finnischen Mythologie: er war der erste Gott der alten Finnen. Der Bär wird für sein menschliches Aussehen und seine enorme Kraft respektiert. Es war ein gefürchtetes Tier, aber auch ein heiliges und angesehenes Tier. Die Bedeutung des Bären für die Finnen erklärt sich auch aus der Tatsache, dass er in unserer Sprache mehr als zweihundert verschiedene Namen hat: Honigpalme, Kontio, Waldapfel, Waldkönig und Teddybär. Es gibt eine große Anzahl von Karhu-Produkten, Statuen und Ortsnamen & Familiennamen.

Karhu - The bear is the national animal in Finland and plays an important role in the Finnish mythology: it was the first god of the ancient Finns. The bear is respected for its human appearance and tremendous powers. It has been a feared animal, but also a sacred and respected animal. The importance of the bear to us Finns is also explained by the fact that it has more than two hundred different names in our language: honey palm, kontio, forest apple, forest king and teddy bear. There is a huge number of Karhu products, statues and place names & surnames.

The National Museum of Finland is a handsome building designed by the architects 
Gesellius, Lindgren, & Saarinen. The architecture freely mimics the architectural themes 
of different eras in Finland, medieval churches and castles. 
The architecture represents national romance and the interior is mainly Art Nouveau. 
The museum was built between 1905 and 1910.

Here's an interesting detail: during our Civil War in 1918, a bullet pierced the iron outdoor.

Sightseeing: Espoo Car Museum

I am not so enthusiastic about cars, but my 11 years old grandson is!

So sightseeing it was one rainy day. The cities of our capital region go this way:

Espoo in the west, Helsinki in the middle and Vantaa in the east.

Espoo Car Museum is the oldest car museum in Finland with its 40 years. 

It is located in an old & nostalgic grey stone stable. The two museum floors filled with cars, 

bicycles, mopeds, toys & all sorts of related equipment, portray a piece 

of Finnish automotive culture, from vintage cars to the 50’s American’s.

This Formula 1 vehicle is one of Mika Häkkinen’s first cars.

I doubt that neither Kim Räikkönen or Valtteri Bottas would satisfy with it!

The museum has been elected The Car Museum of the Year 2019 being the oldest and 

one of the largest motor-vehicle museums in Finland.  And full of cars it really was,
even to the extent that it was hard to find the needed distance to take a photo!

The museum was a bit dusty and too crowded, but the boy was in heaven!
