Old Cemetery in Lohja

A while ago I visited the Church of St. Lawrence in Lohja. It is one of Finland’s
most beautifully decorated medieval churches. I took also some photos of its beautiful cemetery
where old and newer graves mix with each other.

Lohja is a bilingual city and many names had a Swedish clang
- Wikström, Österman, Johansson, Alenius...

The grave of a well-known politician and former Prime Minister Johannes Virolainen (1914-2000)
and his second spouse is beside the church entrance.

Friday Bliss #157 - Pyörre, a Round House

One of the most unique venues at the Lohja Housing Fair was definitely the Pyörre House. Pyörre / Whirl is a spacious circular detached house with a floor area of about 230 square meters. The base of the house are screw piles and its frame is made of recycled steel. Compared to strength, steel is considerably lighter than concrete and easily recyclable. The steels of four scrapped cars have been used for the frame of the house!

It was crowded and very wet, so I could take only a few photos. Well, the house is very original, but not my dream home. The best thing was the round atrium garden, in my photo in a pouring rain.

There were many art works by Johanna Oranen.

I found these windows & deep window sills very beautiful, like art works.

Friday Bliss #153 - Housing Fair & Physalis

The Housing Fair (part II) is not only the largest housing and living event in Finland, it is also a significant idea bank and marketplace both in the real world and on the internet. Every year, for four weeks in July-August, various living solutions and residential areas are showcased at the Housing Fair. The needs of different demographical groups are taken into consideration at the planning stage and a wide range of building, renovation, interior design and landscaping solutions are presented every time.

This year The Housing Fair was in Lohja, the next in Naantali. Me & hubby visited the Lohja fair with friends and took a few photos. I liked a lot the simple Scandinavian decoration in earthy tones. My own home is not this stylish, but you can always dream!

This children’s room was adorable. There was a lot to see!
This is Designtalo’s Idyll. If you wish to walk through the house, clic to the video HERE!
On the video you can see a luxury walk-in-closet that was in many houses.

I could not resist this beautiful Physalis alkekengi in pot.
I have somehow lost it in my garden and shall later plant this into the ground.
As to colors I think it fits the color sceme. Photographed in front of my old
and withered picture fame where I have put a mirror.

Housing Fair in Lohja, Part I

The Housing Fair is not only the largest housing and living event in Finland,
it is also a significant idea bank and marketplace both in the real world and on the internet.
The fair is arranged every year, this year in Lohja, next year in Naantali.

The area of the Housing Fair in Lohja is situated on the shore of Lake Lohja
- a fabulous place to live. Many houses have a lake view.
I’ll share later some indoor views, now I concentrate on landscaping & surroundings.

A deck like this would be divine!

More far from the shore there was this nice looking dry brook
with pebbles & stones of different colors and Lythrum salicaria.
I wonder how they keep the pebbles clean.... With a leaf blower?

The houses on the area were new, but there was this beautiful old house
that had been totally renovated. Situated on the shore of Lake Lohja & surrounded by
big Salix albas & with a big wooden deck. Autumn perennials looked fresh
in front of the house’s stone foundation.

Looks so neat and clean: a plank separating soil from the gravel.

Friday Bliss #150 - The Church of St. Lawrence in Lohja

Today I’ll take you to The Middle Ages. Finnish medieval stone churches were built mainly of granite, but brick was often used in parts that required demanding design. According to current knowledge, there were 104 stone church projects, but some were discontinued or have since been demolished.

The Church of St. Lawrence in Lohja is a medieval greystone church that was built between 1470 and 1490. The interior lime paintings date back to the time of Bishop Arvid Kurki (1510–1522). St. Lawrence Church in Lohja and The Holy Cross Church in Hattula are the most significant decorated churches in Finland, and they are considered sister churches because of their abundant paintings. The church is dedicated to St. Laurentius, the deacon, who suffered martyr death.

Here I have to praise this amazing Finnish novel that was released this year.
The Saint of the Rats by Anneli Kanto tells how the lime paintings were done
in The Holy Cross Church in Hattula. There was a group of church painters who came from
Sweden (Finland belonged to Sweden at that time). The identity of the painters is unknown,
but probably the same group of painters decorated also the church in Lohja.
