Friday Bliss #137 - Spring in the Neighbourhood

Around the festivities of First of May, in Finland called Vappu, the weather is usually bad.
Perhaps the gods want to keep people away from too wild celebrating and booze drinking
on the streets and in the parks :)) I’ll share today some impressions seen while walking
in the neighbourhood and then some fantastic plants of the garden center Viherpaja.
I shopped only with my eyes, no annuals can be planted yet.

I certainly wish good luck to this guy who tries to get rid of his invasive
Fallopia japonica! I had only a couple of small plants, but it took me
five years to get rid of them without poison.

Kids of the local elementary school had their excercise lesson outdoors.
As you see the birches are not sprouting yet.

The garden center Viherpaja had on sale stunning Mandevilla plants in white and pink.

... and pelargonias and roses with a trunk!

The most exquisite plant was this big Echium webbii, that I have never seen before.
I think that Nova must know it, because it grows on the Canary Islands.
See the link of Wikipedia where you’ll find a beautiful photo of a fully grown plant.

"Echium webbii is endemic to the Canary Islands, where it is restricted to the island of La Palma. The flowers are normally blue and produced in numerous spikes in early summer, but a hybrid is sometimes seen with white or pink flowers. It grows to average height 100 centimetres (39 in), maximum height 150 centimetres (59 in).The plant is not very tolerant of cold, and in the wild is a shrub. It can be grown in gardens in mild areas, but requires good drainage."

I have lost many Japanese maples, but think I have to try this lime one once more!
Bougainvillea is definitely not for me, but stunning it is!

My April in Collage

April has offered all kinds of weather. There were some sunny days and pretty warm days
and I went eagerly outdoors to plant thujas and preparing the terrace for the summer.
But then the weather changed: it was rainy and so frightening cold, even wet snow.
The most wonderful happening was this rare visitor
a gorgeous goshawk who sat for a while outside the window.

I sincerely hope that the trees start to sprout and the sun comes out!
Wishing you all a good start to May!

Soft Pink of Prunus triloba

It is so cold that it feels like a new ice age is coming!
Nothing sprouts outdoors, that is why I went to Viherpaja in intention to visit their
Japanese Garden (under roof). Well, the Japanese garden was closed due to the corona virus,
but I could admire their other gorgeous plants on sale and this blooming Prunus triloba,
which we call in Finnish rose almond.

I am hiding behind Araucaria heterophylla!

Tastes good!

The topic of Makrotex is today TASTES GOOD!
Strawberries definitely taste good. These are imported from Spain,
the Finnish ones will be ready to eat in late June.

Reading outdoors is a pleasure!

Friday Bliss #136 - Preparing for the Summer

This week we have had some warm & sunny days, but next week will be chilly.
Scillas and Omphalodes verna are blooming and I have among other things painted outdoors.
We bought a new dining set for the terrace and also nice plastic, but willow looking
black balcony boxes were found. I have painted black also some very old
big containers - they look brand new!

We had yesterday the first chives omelette of the season, delicious!

Tete-a-tete daffodils will be planted in the garden after blooming.

The other day I had strawberries and was reading outdoors - wonderful!

Also Viola odoratus is blooming. They are so tiny, not yet blooming abundantly,
because I divided them last year.

EDIT: This Friday morning the scenery is white, it is snowing wet snow!

Thank you for all the lovely comments you leave week after week at Friday Bliss.
Wishing a happy & sunny weekend!

It’s Scilla Time!

Quite a few wood pigeons visit my garden and they love to sit
high up in our maple tree. But they are so scared of me!
Scillas are blooming despite of the cool weather.
