Friday Bliss #197 - Midsummer Mix

It's summer, it's Midsummer and the gorgeous Nordic night.

Happiness and joy in people’s minds, because of

this fascinating magic of nightless night.

The Summer Solstice occured this year on Tuesday, the 21st of June. But today we celebrate in Finland Midsummer’s Eve and the nightless night! In Lapland the sun does not set at all from June 15 till July 1. In Helsinki region the sun sets for only about 4 hours - so the night is short also here!

This Midsummer we are going to have splendid weather - up till 30 C and sunshine. It feels wonderful, as awckward it may seem the Midsummer weather is often cool and rainy in Finland. I’ll have family members visiting and we’ll have dinner on the terrace.

The whole week has been gorgeous, warm and sunny. Many perennials and rose shrubs are in bloom and I have done this and that in the garden. My Midsummer bouquet was made with peonies, aquilegias, hemerocallis etc.

Friday Bliss #145 - Happy Midsummer!

It has been a beautiful, very hot & sunny week. Plants bloom and wither fast.

For my Midsummer bouquet there was only one decent peony left.

Fortunately we got good thunder rain on Wednesday, it was so needed.

Last weekend my husband’s two daughters Sanna and Milla came to visit us 

and Milla had baked me this wonderful strawberry cake. We had so fun meeting each other 

for such a long time. Hubby and I have enjoyed our lunches on the terrace.

I’ll share once more this Midsummer poem by Eino Leino (1878 – 1926). 

His poems combine modern and Finnish folk elements. The style of much of his work 

is like the Kalevala and folk songs. Nature, love, and despair are frequent themes 

in Leino's work. His poem Midsummer is very beloved in Finland. 

JUHANNUS

Minä avaan syömeni selälleen

ja annan päivän paistaa,

minä tahdon kylpeä joka veen

ja joka marjan maistaa.

Minun mielessäni on juhannus

ja juhla ja mittumaari,

ja jos minä illoin itkenkin,

niin siellä on sateenkaari.

Friday Bliss #93 - Happy Midsummer!

We Finns call Rosa spinosissima /  R. pimpinellifolia ’Plena’ Midsummer Rose - Juhannusruusu.

To me it is the symbol of juhannus! This year their timing is perfect.

Today the length of day in Helsinki is 18h 56min, in Rovaniemi 24h 0min

This is what the expression Land of the Midnight Sun means: no night & never-ending light. 
But the never-ending light is problematic to tourists and to some Finns too. Brit Joel Willans says: 

"The reality is a bit different. Never-ending light lasts for about three months. 
Never-ending light feels cool for about 48 hours. After that you realise that never-ending light 
means never-decent sleep, and that hurts your head... a lot. 
I stayed in summer Lapland for about a week. By day three I was putting towels over the curtains 
and wrapping my face in pillows while wearing sunglasses, anything and everything to keep
 the never-ending light at bay. It didn’t work. I couldn’t sleep. The never-ending light won.”

I tested quickly also floating roses, this is very good for peonies...

For Midsummer I made a wildflower like bouquet. I did not have cornflowers,

but blue Centaurea montana act as them. Then I used pink aquilegias and 

a bit of Aruncus dioicus. Voilà - Midsummer may come!

Hyvää juhannusta! - Happy Midsummer!

At first I want to say THANK YOU ❤︎ to all of you who have left 
nice & supporting comments regarding my foot injury. 
I'll pay a return visit when my mind is in a more normal state :)
The summer is at its peak and we have Midsummer - sunny days and no night at all.
