Memories from June - Roseum Elegans

My Rhododendron catawbiense ’Roseum elegans’ is old and huge.

It grew on the property when we moved here 19 years ago.

Its branches are crooked and the poor rhododendron grows under a root sprouting cherry tree,

Sorbus aucuparia, a couple of Cornus alba & Rosa glauca - but this June it bloomed beautifully!

’Roseum elegans’ was breeded by the Brit Anthony Waterer in 1800s.

Its buds are very dark.

Paradise on Earth - Part I

I have paid my yearly visit to Rhododendron Park Haaga, Helsinki - and not a day too late, 

because the blooms had started to wither. Nevertheless to me it felt once again 

a paradise on earth with its 8 hectares dedicated to rhododendrons and azaleas!

The park was founded in the 1970’s and has been a research garden for 

University of Helsinki’s plant breeding programme. The rhododendrons are huge 

and the azaleas colourful and so scented. I was afraid that the plants might have suffered 

from last year’s hot & dry summer, but no trace of damage!

Friday Bliss #39 - Rhododendron Haaga

HAAGA is a Finnish breed, hardy in our climate. The name Haaga comes from a district of Helsinki where the rhododendron park of Helsinki is situated - Haagan alppiruusupuisto. The pink flowers, with a darkly spotted upper petal, cover the shrub in mid-June. It has a regular round shape, growing about 1.5m in 10 years. My previous posts of the Haaga Rhododenron Park can be found HERE. My shrub is not healthy looking, because the growing spot is too dry. But nevertheless it delights me with its pink flowers growing in front of my lilac hedge, behind the old apple tree.

This week’s weather has definitely been a treat: full sun & nearly 30 C!

Rhododendron Jungle - Rodoviidakossa

I was lucky to visit this stunning rhododendron and azalea jungle in June 

with two healthy feet! I have posted already about my visit, but the park is really great.

Floral Bliss #76

I paid a visit to Rhododendron Park Haaga, Helsinki. The link tells widely about
this stunning park with 8 hectares dedicated to rhododendrons and azaleas.
Founded in the 1970's the area has been a research garden for the University of Helsinki’s 
plant breeding programme. I.a. these varieties have found their way to the market:
‘Haaga’, ‘Helsinki University’, ‘St. Michel’, ‘P.M.A. Tigerstedt’, ‘Axel Tigerstedt’, 

‘Pekka’, ‘Eino’ and ‘Mauritz’.

Haagan Alppiruusupuisto on kerrassaan upea 8 hehtaarin puisto, 
joka on omistettu alppiruusuille ja azaleoille.
1970-luvulla perustettu puisto on toiminut Helsingin yliopiston kasvinjalostuksen koealueena 
ja sieltä myyntiin ovat päässeet mm.’Haaga’, ’Helsinki University’, ’St. Michel’, 
’P.M.A. Tigerstedt’, ’Axel Tigerstedt’, ’Pekka’, ’Eino’ ja ’Mauritz’.

The timing of my visit was not perfect. I should have gone a week ago 

but still especially azaleas looked charming and their scent was wonderful.
As to rhododendrons mainly whites were still in bloom and I suppose they were 'St. Michel'.
I did not get close enough so I added a few photos from my 'St. Michel'.

Käyntini ajoitus ei ollut paras mahdollinen. Kukinta oli huipussaan viikko sitten,
mutta silti erityisesti azaleat olivat hurmaavia ja ihanasti tuoksuvia.
Käytännössä vaion kookkaat valkoiset rhodot olivat kukassa, ja luulen että lajike on 'Mikkeli'.
Koska en päässyt riitävän lähelle, lisäsin muutaman kuvan omasta 'Mikkelistäni.

I'll save the gorgeous azaleas for another post. - Ihanat tuoksuvat azaleat jätän toiseen kertaan.
