Rhododendron Jungle - Rodoviidakossa

I was lucky to visit this stunning rhododendron and azalea jungle in June
with two healthy feet! I have posted already about my visit, but the park is really great.
Hope you’ll enjoy some new photos of it. Links to the previous posts are at the end.

Rhododendron Park Haaga, Helsinki - with 8 hectares dedicated to rhododendrons
and azaleas was founded in the 1970’s and has been a research garden for
University of Helsinki’s plant breeding programme.

  1. ...was in the nursery business for 50 years before I recently retired. Rhododendron from the University of Helsinki's plant breeding program have become popular in the US.

    1. So nice to know Tom - they are hardy in the US conditions similar to us. For instance ’Haaga’, ‘Helsinki University’, ‘St. Michel’, ‘P.M.A. Tigerstedt’, and ’Pekka’.

    1. It really is. But you have to be right with the timing, because the withering may start overnight.

    1. Haagan alppiruusupuisto on kuin paratiisi. Rodot olivat vähän ylikukkineita, mutta laaja azalea-alue oli aivan upea!

  6. When we lived in Cleveland, Ohio, we were fortunate to live near Holden Arboretum, which had a large collection of azaleas and rhodies. It was a favorite destination in the spring, and your pictures brought back very fond memories. I am pleased you brought this color to Mosaic Monday this week!

    1. I wonder how this large area managed in the last summer’s heat and draught. It must have been impossible to water the whole area. The azaleas were really stunning bright and very scented, the huge rhodos already in a withering phase.

  12. What a beautiful place to visit, Riitta. I didn't know that rhododendrons would survive a Finnish winter.

    1. All varieties don’t survive our winters. That is why Helsinki University has breeded hardy varieties such as for instance ’Haaga’, ’Helsinki University’, ’St. Michel’, ‘P.M.A. Tigerstedt’, and ’Pekka’.

  14. What a delight! Once upon a time I lived near the rhododendron garden in San Francisco's Golden Gate Park. It was a treat to walk among the flowers.
