Library on Wheels

At their highest peak there were 200 library buses on the roads of Finland, now numbering 140. But one of them stops once a week nearby, at the local primary school. I looked in and it was filled with happy kids. So great to see that new readers are growing up! I use a lot of library but never thought about this option. Library buses offer literature for all ages - also bestsellers! - and I could easily change my library reservations here.

In Vantaa there are two library buses - DREAM & STORY and 107 stops: 33 kindergartens, 28 schools and 46 street stops. Borrowing activity is lively and in 2018 there were about 172 000 loans, most of which were literature for children and young people.

This is my most recent loan - Wanderings in Italy - Traveler of the Year Award 2019.

The Mondo magazine in Finland especially praises the book for its rich travel stories:

OODI - The Public Library of the Year 2019!

The best new public library of the year 2019 is Oodi Helsinki Central Library!

This is what the jury said:

Looking like a large, undulating wooden ship, Finland’s most spectacular library is located in the middle of the capital’s city square, with a direct view of the Finnish parliament. The spectacular Oodi building is in every way the house of the people, because the citizens themselves have contributed with requests and suggestions for how it could be used. At the same time, 95 per cent of the library’s 10,000 square feet of space is open to the public for 90 hours a week.

International Federation of Library Associations / IFLA and the Danish software company Systematic choose the yearly winner. The award is presented to a library that has best managed to combine open, functional architecture with creative IT solutions, and that has also included modern digital capabilities as well as elements from local culture.

The four nominated libraries were:

About Finnish Libraries

As you know I read a lot. Most of my reading is borrowed from libraries.

The Helmet Libraries of the Helsinki region function so smoothly:
I can reserve books to my nearest library, check online when they are ready to be picked,

the library even sends me an e-mail. All this service is for free.

Here are the customers' reservations ready to be picked.

A person’s alias distinguishes the own books and keeps privacy intact.

Under the Library Act, every Finnish municipality must provide library services

that meet certain standards. Public library services, as all other public services, must be equally accessible to everyone. All basic services are free of charge for all users.
