Ett Hem Museum, Turku

The museum Ett hem (home) is the home museum of Consul Alfred Jacobsson and his wife Hélène. They donated their home to the Åbo Akademi University Foundation. The museum was opened to the public in 1932 in the family's original stone house on Hämeenkatu. After the demolition of the Hämeenkatu house, the museum was moved to a wooden empire house on Piispankatu in 1965. The museum displays collections of art, artefacts and furniture collected by the Jacobssons.

Me & hubby enjoyed the museum. The young guide was very aware of all the paintings and history of the objects. We were the only visitors and got a private guided tour through the house. If you go to Turku, I warmly recommend.

Hélène (1854–28) and Alfred (1841–31) Jacobsson were a typical bourgeois couple in Turku. Hélène had grown up in a wealthy family and had been educated and raised to be a good wife. Jacobsson's couple also co-founded the Åbo Akademi University Foundation in 1917. Alfred was a successful businessman and worked in many companies, e.g. Turku Iron Industry, Steamship Company Bore, Turku Tile Factory, Turku Osakepankki, Turku Verkatehdas and insurance company Verdandi. Hélène and Alfred were married in 1877. The couple never had children of their own, but they adopted an adopted daughter from Sweden named Kerstin.

Friday Bliss #134 - Warm and Cozy Inside

The week has been chilly with wind, rain and wet snow. For Friday the weather forecast

promises strong storm. I have spent my time mainly inside reading and Sissi sleeping.

This is one of her hiding places where she can sleap peacefully.

During Easter I read this fantastic biography of Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861-1919)

written by Salla Leponiemi. I’ll leave here the link, in case you want to read,

there is Google translator. Elin lived in a time when it was extremely difficult for a female

artist to get the deserved acknowledgement.

This excellent portrait of her friend Hilma was harshly critizised by Finnish art critics

but gained the bronce medal the next year in Paris world fair 1889.

While married to Italian painter Raffaello Gambogi her husband had a short love affair 

with Elin’s good Finnish friend. The red, post-marital crisis self-portrait from 1903

is described in the book in this way: 

The small but intense self-portrait continues the tradition of Renaissance: 

a tightly cropped bust, a focused gaze and clenched lips. The connection to history is reinforced 

by the red velvet of the dress, a privilege allowed to an authoritative man in Italy 

during the Renaissance. At the same time, the image introduces a modern, unbreakable woman 

looking at the viewer from above. She can't be broken down. 

Elin's eyes look tired, the nights without sleep have drawn traces around them, 

but the gaze speaks of mental strength and vitality.

Halosenniemi - The House Full of Women

Pekka Halonen - After the music lesson, 1894

Pekka Halonen (1865 - 1933) is one of the most beloved artists of the Golden Era of Finnish art: a versatile artist and master portrayer of Finnish landscapes and people. The countryside around Lake Tuusula - a bit over 30 km from the center of Helsinki - provided him with a rich source of ideas and inspiration. HERE great photos of his paintings.

The imposing pinewood villa known as ‘Halosenniemi’ 

was designed by the artist himself and his brother and was completed in 1902.

Around Lake Tuusula there was a lively community of artists 

involving the best of the Finnish culture. In addition to Halonen also 

the composer Jean Sibelius, painters Eero Järnefelt and Venny Soldan-Brofeldt, 

the writer Juhani Aho and the poet J. H. Erkko.

But what I really want to talk about is the fantastic art exhibition of Halosenniemi 

with the most famous painters of our Golden Era: The House Full of Women.

I have been tracing Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861-1919). She got married to an Italian painter Rafaello Gambogi and lived the rest of her life in Italy.  Halosenniemi exhibition presents 10 works of hers! It was not allowed to photograph at the exhibition. Therefore I searched online these two paintings I saw, under the CC-license. The texts are from the novel I read by Kati Kanto - Finnish-Italian Rhapsody. 

"I get so well along with aunt Balda, everybody does. She beats everybody playing cards.

It is her bravura, that she has kept practicing since a young girl.

She has become quite a maestro! Aunt Balda is smoking her cigarettes and

clearly enjoying her life. She does not care a bit what people think of her.”

Artist of July - Elin Danielson-Gambogi

After breakfast 1900

Elin Danielson-Gambogi 1861 - 1919 was a Finnish Swedish speaking painter, a life long friend of Helene Schjerfbeck. She studied in Helsinki and in Paris at Académie Colarossi and with Auguste Rodin.  

She dominated classic techniques, landscape painting, perspective and she worked a short time at Arabia porcelaine factory as a decorator. She arose much discussion because of her female portraits. She painted women in their daily life, in very light clothes, in their underwear and even smoking. That was outrageous at that time!

She painted also landscapes with light colors and Mediterranean sceneries.

She got married to an Italian painter Rafaello Gambogi, who was 13 years younger than her. They lived in a small village of Torre del Lago, worked and had exhibitions together.

She died of pneumonia and is buried with her husband in Livorno, Italy.

I have to thank Barbara and her Paint monthly. I had almost forgotten this great painter but found her gorgeous paintings again. Her art fits so well in July!
