Pekka Halonen - After the music lesson, 1894
Pekka Halonen (1865 - 1933) is one of the most beloved artists of the Golden Era of Finnish art: a versatile artist and master portrayer of Finnish landscapes and people. The countryside around Lake Tuusula - a bit over 30 km from the center of Helsinki - provided him with a rich source of ideas and inspiration. HERE great photos of his paintings.
The imposing pinewood villa known as Halosenniemi
was designed by the artist himself and his brother and was completed in 1902.
Around Lake Tuusula there was a lively community of artists
involving the best of the Finnish culture. In addition to Halonen also
the composer Jean Sibelius, painters Eero Järnefelt and Venny Soldan-Brofeldt,
the writer Juhani Aho and the poet J. H. Erkko.
But what I really want to talk about is the fantastic art exhibition of Halosenniemi
with the most famous painters of our Golden Era: The House Full of Women.
The following links lead to my previous posts about these painters: Elin Danielson-Gambogi,
Helene Schjerfbeck, Maria Wiik, Albert Edelfelt, Akseli Gallen-Kallela, & Pekka Halonen.

I have been tracing Elin Danielson-Gambogi (1861-1919). She got married to an Italian painter Rafaello Gambogi and lived the rest of her life in Italy. Halosenniemi exhibition presents 10 works of hers! It was not allowed to photograph at the exhibition. Therefore I searched online these two paintings I saw, under the CC-license. The texts are from the novel I read by Kati Kanto - Finnish-Italian Rhapsody.
"I get so well along with aunt Balda, everybody does. She beats everybody playing cards.
It is her bravura, that she has kept practicing since a young girl.
She has become quite a maestro! Aunt Balda is smoking her cigarettes and
clearly enjoying her life. She does not care a bit what people think of her.”
- The entertainment of Aunt Balda 1886, text Kati Kanto
"It is clear that I'm swimming upstream the whole time. Every single minute I have to
fight against something. If it is not a concrete obstacle, someone’s opinion,
it is the general mind setting. Oh how I love this painting about Tytti puffing smoke
of her cigarette. It is so typical of her!
But how much have I heard disapprovals and disgracing comments!”
- After the Breakfast 1890, text Kati Kanto / the model was the painter’s sister
Youtube has also other videos of Danielson-Gambogi’s works.
Dear Riitta,
VastaaPoistaa wonderful old house and the paintings are really worth seeing. Thanks for showing!
Sunny Sunday and best regards
moni
The house is really big & impressive. Gorgeous looking in the inside too. What a pity that it was not allowed to photograoh.
PoistaFunny, you never see people smoking anymore!
VastaaPoistaThat's true Sandi. From old paintings cigarettes are more digficult to remove than from old movies :)
PoistaSon preciosos. Un beso.
VastaaPoistaLo son! Besos.
PoistaLooks like a wonderful place to visit with the view and the beautiful paintings.
VastaaPoistaIt is a beautiful place and the paintings were gorgeous. Due to contract reasons photographing was not allowed.
PoistaI love the natural wood and rock incorporated into the structure. It has lasted very well since 1902 construction. - Margy
VastaaPoistaUma bela casa e as pinturas são fantásticas.
VastaaPoistaUm abraço e um bom mês de Junho.

What a beautiful looking wooden house with lovely windows. I always enjoy reading about women artists and seeing their work. Sounds like an interesting exhibition.
VastaaPoistaFrom your photos, the setting is one to inspire imagination and creativity. I'd like to be there.
VastaaPoistaRiitta - the setting is ideal for artists seeking inspiration. It always fascinates me when a community of artists develops in one area, or perhaps the area draws them. When it happens, it is a very special event, and spawns great creativity, as we can see here. Love the art! (and I can see why perhaps the artist was criticized for the portrayal of her sister …) Thanks for exposing us to the work of these artists, and for linking to Mosaic Monday!
VastaaPoistaOh, this is a wonderful post! I enjoyed seeing the images of these paintings, learning more about the artists, and that house is delightful. I love the tall windows!
VastaaPoista...'The House Full of Women' sound like where I grew up! I love the natural log style and the soothing piano. Thanks Riitta for sharing!
VastaaPoistaHello, love the beautiful house and the artwork. The views of the lake are lovely. Enjoy your day, have a great new week!
VastaaPoistaHow interesting! Both of the paintings are so realistic and I love the quotes you included. Things don't really change that much over the years...criticism and discouragement has always existed. A wonderful post my friend!
VastaaPoistaThank you for introducing me to a new artist. I love the two paintings you featured.
VastaaPoistaAbsolutely lovely paintings and stunning property! Thank you for sharing ! Have a wonderful week.
VastaaPoistaWhat a wonderful place. Love the construction of the house, the setting, and the art.
VastaaPoistaThanks for joining up at this week's linky party at https://image-in-ing.blogspot.com/2019/06/pop-art-i-dont-get-it.html
Not heard the music before but like the series of paintings in the clip. Funny on the smoking - I wonder how many they had while sitting for the artist??
