The Cruelest Month

To me the cruelest month is November - colorless, wet  and dark.

Some impressions from my daily walks.

But you can find a lot of materials for DIY works: chestnuts, cones,

lingonberry & blueberry twigs and twigs with beard moss... I made this chestnut cone

twenty years ago and it is as good as new!

Seeing the non existent colors of the Finnish nature in November, 

you’ll understand why my thoughts turn to Christmas!

DIY - Simple Feather Wreath

You need a glue gun, feathers of your choice and some basic wreath

that needs uplifting. I chose natural brown feathers and my old willow wreath.

This DIY took only a few minutes. The wreath shall decorate an inner door at my home

but looks beautiful also as table decoration with a yellow candle. - OBS.  Careful if lit!

There is not yet much color to be seen in the nature, only dark green of conifers 

& blue of the sky. During my walks I see a few kids with their bikes and a dog now and then.
This lion pair guards the entrance of a neighbour...

Makrotex - Seinällä, On the Wall

The topic of Makrotex this week is ON THE WALL.

It could be paintings, lamps, hooks etc. But I chose old wreath photos from my archive.

Christmas is approaching and I usually start to decorate the house mid November.

This wreath is old and made by me of blueberry twigs. When it turned brown I sprayed it grey, added some rosehips and a wooden angel - voilà! This lasts for ages.

Friday Bliss #4

LAZY LADY’S DECO

This is an instant DIY job. Looks nice but does not, of course, last long.

A nice autumn decoration for one festive evening.

I used my old salix wreath, added some lime Humulus lupulus branches with cones.

In a few seconds ready to host a candle in the middle at the dinner table.
But all my candles were somewhere in Christmas decoration boxes - upstairs out of my reach!

MY READING 

this week has been the newly released MRS C - a fiction novel by Minna Rytisalo. 

It is a book about the young Minna Canth (1844 - 1897) who was a writer and 

keen defender of women’s rights.

The 19th of March we celebrate Minna Canth and equal rights for men and women.

She is the only woman in Finland who has been honoured with an own flag day.

In her later years Minna Canth looked a bit roundish. But this pretty and slender 

she looked in 1865 on her engagement day.

Young Minna Johnson was studying to be a teacher but love came in between

 - and aroused a scandal in the bourgeois small town.

Her fiancé was her physics teacher in the seminar and 9 years older - quite inappropriate.

When the husband died she was tragically pregnant for the seventh child.

Yet she conquered the deep depression and brought up her children and continued to write.

WORLD ANIMAL WEEK 

is being celebrated right now 4th - 10th of October. I made a very, very long lists of writers 

who write about cats. Both Finnish and international names. Click! 

On Sunday I’ll tell you more of literary cats.

End of Summer Thoughts

The summer runs always too fast. By now almost all blooming in the garden is over.

The general sight is that of negligence and perishableness.
But that is the circle of the year and the life.

So no overall photos of the garden but a few glimpses from my terrace.

This annual grass is looking fine and my once dried up blue petunia blooms again.

Rose hips are slowly turning to red...

Kesä kuluu aina liian nopeasti. Melkein kaikki kukinta on jo ohi.

Puutarhassa näyttää huonosti hoidetulta ja kuihtuvaiselta. Luonnon ja elämän kiertokulku.

Ei yleiskuvia siis, vain muutama kuva terassiltani:

yksivuotinen heinä näyttää kivan liehuvalta ja kerran kuivunut sininen petunia kukkii taas.

Ruusunmarjat punastuvat hiljalleen...

Potpourri out of Rose Petals

Ruusupensaat kukkivat parhaillaan runsaasti. Ajattelin säilöä ruusuntuoksua talven iloksi potpourrina. Aiemmin olen tehnyt kuivatuista terälehdistä myös kransseja - se sujuu hyvin liimaamalla ja kultaisella tai hopeisella spiraalilangalla.

Rose shrubs are blooming abundantly right now. You can preserve their scent for winter as potpourri.

Out of dried petals you can also make beautiful wreaths by glueing.

Pieniä tunnelman luojia

Syksyiset ja jopa hiukan jouluiset koristeet hiipivät pikkuhiljaa kotiin. 

Tosin tämä kotitonttu on esillä ympäri vuoden. Itse asiassa se asustaa korkeassa kynttilälyhdyssä valoköynnöksen kanssa, mutta nyt ulkoilutin häntä lyhtykodistaan 

ja kuvasin itse tekemäni käpykuusen kanssa. Männynkävyt ovat aivan loistavaa materiaalia, 

eivät mene miksikään vuosien saatossa!

Autumn and Christmassy decorations find their places little by little at home. 

Actually I keep this ceramic elf in a big lantern throughout the year. 

But this time I took him out of his lantern home and photographed him 

with a self-made pine cone spruce. Pine cones last for ever being an excellent material.

Tein myös orapihlajanmarjoista kevyen kranssin, joka sai hiukan glitteriä päälleen. 

Kranssia voi käyttää vaikka kynttilöiden kanssa tai sitten ovessa.

I made also a light wreath out of hawthorn berries and sprayed a bit of glitter on it. 

The wreath can decorate a door or table candles.
