Friday Bliss #137 - Spring in the Neighbourhood

Around the festivities of First of May, in Finland called Vappu, the weather is usually bad.
Perhaps the gods want to keep people away from too wild celebrating and booze drinking
on the streets and in the parks :)) I’ll share today some impressions seen while walking
in the neighbourhood and then some fantastic plants of the garden center Viherpaja.
I shopped only with my eyes, no annuals can be planted yet.

I certainly wish good luck to this guy who tries to get rid of his invasive
Fallopia japonica! I had only a couple of small plants, but it took me
five years to get rid of them without poison.

Kids of the local elementary school had their excercise lesson outdoors.
As you see the birches are not sprouting yet.

The garden center Viherpaja had on sale stunning Mandevilla plants in white and pink.

... and pelargonias and roses with a trunk!

The most exquisite plant was this big Echium webbii, that I have never seen before.
I think that Nova must know it, because it grows on the Canary Islands.
See the link of Wikipedia where you’ll find a beautiful photo of a fully grown plant.

"Echium webbii is endemic to the Canary Islands, where it is restricted to the island of La Palma. The flowers are normally blue and produced in numerous spikes in early summer, but a hybrid is sometimes seen with white or pink flowers. It grows to average height 100 centimetres (39 in), maximum height 150 centimetres (59 in).The plant is not very tolerant of cold, and in the wild is a shrub. It can be grown in gardens in mild areas, but requires good drainage."

I have lost many Japanese maples, but think I have to try this lime one once more!
Bougainvillea is definitely not for me, but stunning it is!

Thank you for all the lovely comments you leave week after week at Friday Bliss.

Soft Pink of Prunus triloba

It is so cold that it feels like a new ice age is coming!
Nothing sprouts outdoors, that is why I went to Viherpaja in intention to visit their
Japanese Garden (under roof). Well, the Japanese garden was closed due to the corona virus,
but I could admire their other gorgeous plants on sale and this blooming Prunus triloba,
which we call in Finnish rose almond.

I am hiding behind Araucaria heterophylla!

The Japanese Garden of Viherpaja

I usually visit Viherpaja in the spring. It is a conservatory & garden center
and their main attraction is a Japanese Garden under roof.
It is wonderful to go there and look how the ferns start to curl, the small waterfall
burbles and pink cherries are in bloom - while out in the nature nothing happens yet.
These photos are from last spring, April-May.

Brats of the Concrete Jungle

I went yesterday to the garden center Viherpaja to admire their Japanese garden. But look what I saw to my great astonishment! An exhibition of graffiti artists in this greenhouse. The exhibition made a huge impact on me and want to share it with you. The organizator of the exhibition is graffiti artist Jouni Väänänen.

Brats of the Concrete Jungle brings over 50 street art and graffiti influenced artworks to an unusual environment: Viherpaja Oy’s greenhouse. The exhibition includes pieces from 17 artists ranging from long-term professionals to first-time enthusiasts. The exhibition is deliberately experimental and the range of style of the artworks is wide - the only limitation given in advance was that the artists themselves have to perceive their repertory in one way or another as a part of street or graffiti art. Most of the exhibitions’ artworks are for sale. In addition, some artists are also available for commissioned work. The contact details of each artist or their representative are found next to the works.

ARTISTS

Blooming Pink Cherries

May Day in Finland is always cool & rainy - this year too: no picnic & celebrating outdoors.
So I went on an excursion to Viherpaja, Vantaa to look at blooming pink cherries.
❤︎
I visited Viherpaja a month ago too, but no new growth was then to be seen.  Now double pink Japanese cherries - Prunus serrulata 'Kanzan' - had started their Hanami and Japanese maples showed new leaves. In the shop there were a lot of pansies & other spring flowers to be admired and bought.

My better side :)

This buddha appealed to me in the middle of beautiful bonsai trees.
I am not able to keep bonsai alive, so I purchased only the buddha for my garden.

Myymälässä oli upeita bonsaita, mutta tyydyin vain tähän buddhaan.

Happy May my friends! - Ihanaa toukokuuta ystävät!
