Between the Rains

Today it is a rainy day at last in Finland!

I took a few quick shots between the rains. We have many curved paths in the garden,

but in front of our garage there is a straight pavement plus straight long lower bed.

Something is blooming throughout the summer. At the moment Hemerocallis &

Veronicastrum virginicum. There are still some late bloomers to come.

This is some Aconitum. I suspect it is Aconitum lycoctonum subsp. neapolitanum.

I have got it in a plant swap and the good thing is that it needs no support

and spreads very well.

The Phlox are still mainly in bud.

To the right from the long flower bed there is a small patch of lawn & rose shrubs.

Because it is a sunny & dry spot this big Echinops sphaerocephalus / Great globe-thistle
grows there. Its height is from 150 cm till 200 cm!

Friday Bliss #202 - Wood Artist Robert Lappalainen

Old Love / Vanha rakkaus

These fabulous wood sculptures were on show at Gumbostrand Konst & Form created by Robert Lappalainen. This is how former race car driver, nowadays wood artist Lappalainen (b. 1949) presents himself:

"On my own farm, I cut down the trees myself and after drying them, unique art is created. I am excited as a little boy about my new profession, so it will be a long day at the workshop. I often sit for long periods of time in my studio and think, what I am going to do with that huge tree trunk. In the end it turns into a beautiful unique work of art. Before it is finished it has been worked for months, piece by piece towards the end result. When the piece is finished, I hug it and thank it for the wonderful time together, because the tree has done the greatest job growing for 150 years and I only spent a few months on it.”

I don’t know the name of this one, but I like its brownish shade very much.

Friday Bliss #47 - August Flowers for the Weekend

I have only a few different Hemerocallis and no abundant plantings of them.

I have donated all my Hemerocallis fulva to daughter & daughter-in-law.

This very dark brown is 'Sweet Hot Chocolate’, 'Frans Hals' behind.

This might be ’Sammy Russel’ - I have got it on a plant swap.

I love this the most, it is very beautiful in the sun.

Then I have this ’Destined to See’. It looks so lovely in the photo,

but so faded and ugly in my garden. Photo from here.

Bumblebees like also Veroniga virginica ’Alba’.

BEST BOOKS OF JULY

Best international books I red were Cien Años de Soledad by Gabriel García Márquez

- finally! And Beth Kempton’s Wabi-Sabi.

Right now I’m reading Alex Michaelides’ debut Silent Patient.

The protagonists are Alicia who shoots her husband and then never speaks another word

and psychotherapist Theo who is convinced he can successfully treat Alicia,

where all others have failed. If Alicia speaks, would he want to hear the truth?

Garden Week Mostly in Purple

This week has been characterized by strong wind and chilly weather.

After the hot & sunny May we are back to normal :)

The DRAUGHT is severe and many plants suffer despite of watering.

Rhododendron Catawbiense 'Roseum Elegans' or 'Grandiflorum'

I have only two rhododendrons and they are really sad looking in this draught.

Some blooms anyhow, this puple is Catawbiense 'Roseum Elegans' or 'Grandiflorum'.

The shrub is big and old, I do hope it survives.

Cornus alba 'Gouchhaultii' - Keltakirjokanukka

I have blue & dark purple pansies in five containers together with lime mummularia...

Somehow alliums are far less and smaller than last year, and also many aquilegias seem to have disappeared.

Plantago media is a fun plant that I like very much. It self sows eagerly in odd places...

Floral Bliss #75

For this week's Floral Bliss I made a quick fantasy bouquet in contrasting colors - yellow and purple. I used a few Hemerocallis, Allium & Rhododendron 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum'. As greens Stachys byzantina. It was a bit too sunny on my terrace, and the background is not the best possible.

Tein iloksenne korkean kimpun kontrastiväreissä - keltaista & violettia: puistoalppiruusua 'Catawbiense Grandiflorum', alliumeja, keltapäivänliljaa ja nukkapähkämöä. Aurinkoista oli tänäänkin terassilla!
