As Global Warming Proceeds...

The climate change & global warming are hot topics today.
NASA lists striking evidence on global warming. According to Nasa there are
several extreme effects that we have been witnessed this summer too:
for example record high temperatures & draught  in Central Europe.

I photographed these hot loving desert plants at Talvipuutarha / The Winter Garden of Helsinki.
Now all these agaves, cacti & other desert plants can survive in Finland
only in greenhouses. But who knows how much and how soon the climate gets warmer?
In recent dystopia literature the writers play among other things with these thoughts:

* Africa and southern parts of Europe turn too hot for people and animals to live.
* Potable water is a rare commodity.
* Due to the heat cattle breeding & cultivation of present plants becomes impossible.
* A famine arouses and drives masses of climate fugitives towards the North.

Of course this is fictional thinking. But who knows. The threat is obvious.
Perhaps in the distant future these plants can survive outdoors also in Finland?

There is a special wing for hot loving plants at The Winter Garden of Helsinki.

  1. Riitta - it is not too late for man to change the course of climate change, but it will take a gargantuan effort by nations, companies and individuals. Let's hope we "wake up" to the reality before it IS too late! Thanks for linking these glorious cacti and hot climate plants to Mosaic Monday!

  3. Liebe Riitta,
ich bin der Überzeugung, dass bei den " kleinen Menschen " der Klimawandel voll und ganz angekommen ist.Die Reaktionen bei den Regierenden lassen leider zu wünschen übrig.
    Deine Fotos begeistern mich.
Einen guten Start in die Woche und liebe Grüße

  4. ...I was in the nursery business for 50 years and over that time we were able to grow more tender plants. Something is going on, call it would you will, but some changes need to be made. Thanks Ritta for sharing today, stay cool this week.

  8. Dear Riitta,
nature lives from constant change. We can only try our best to make it a change for the better.

  9. I really love “Morning has broken.” Climate change is serious, it’s more like total global destruction than simply global warming. There are record hot regions, while there are inexperienced frigid cold. Japan’s muggy summer is like sub-tropical. I really don’t want tropical mosquito to reach Japan.

  11. Climate change is always happening. We all need to do what we can to protect and care for our Earth, that's for certain. Here, though, in western Canada, it's cooler and wetter than normal. I'd welcome a little bit more heat.

  12. "Morning has broken," is one of my favorite songs.
Climate change is an important and serious issue, but apparently unavoidable because people are unable to act against it?
I really like the suptropical garden with its plants.

  16. Global warming is a serious issue. Every year we see a major change in the climate. The winters are getting colder and the summers warmer. These are wonderful shots.
