Christmas at Villa Gyllenberg

Last week I made an Advent trip to Villa Gyllenberg
It is a fantastic art & home museum in Kuusisaari, Helsinki. Mr. Gyllenberg (1891-1977)
was a wealthy banker and invested in medicine research and art.
Helene Schjerfbeck (1862-1946) has been given a predominant place in the collection.
Foreign art – old masters – were represented by individual pieces from the 1500s and 1700s.
The museum was beautifully decorated for Christmas. There were Christmas sweets & nuts
on display and the dinner table was set in the saloon. It was very festive as Mr. Gyllenberg
celebrated his birthday on Christmas Eve.

Albert Edelfelt

Through my travels I found myself at Ateneum is an exhibition of Helene Schjerfbeck.
I’ll tell my impressions about it later - it was fantastic! Not all Gyllenberg’s Schjerfbecks
were on loan at Ateneum. This wonderful Jewish festival from 1883 was at home’
as well as many Schjerfbeck's pastel works.

Yellow roses by Shjerfbeck, about 1888, purchased for € 260,000 in 2019.

La Coiffure Bleu d’après Guys, 1940. Adquisition to Gyllenberg in 2018.

Schjerfbeck painted many versions of this Girl at Gate, 1897-1902.

There seems to be many versions also of this Madonna d’après Greco.

Besides Tizian, of course, my attention was focused on Akseli Gallen Kallela's work
as well Kari Juva's (1939-2014) fine small sculptures.

Ad Astra by Akseli Gallen Kallela

Wäinö Aaltonen's massive Aleksis Kivi s head was also impressive.

  1. Riitta - what a collection of art! The video at the end gave me goosebumps. The song is marvelous, and the voices of those young men are out of this world! Thanks for linking to Mosaic Monday!

  4. Even if the focus should be on the pictures....my eyes were first on the great furniture (this sideboard) and the old frames. That's my style.

But also the pictures impress me, only with the figures, the art objects... they are ok, but I wouldn’t "buy" them for my home. (I know, they are not to sell, but you sure know what I mean)

Thanks for taking me with you, I was happy to accompany you again.

Have a good start into the new week and greetings over to you

    1. The house used to be family Gyllenberg's home, now a museum. They got very rich with their businesses and wanted to decorate the house with antique furniture. The passion of the family was to collect art. It is great that now ordinary people can admire their collection.

The paintings loose a lot on photos. I loved those yellow roses <3

  7. Villa Gyllenberg looks like a cozy museum, where I’d like to stroll through the paintings in person. So happy to be able to see the collection of art I’d never known without seeing this post. Thank you for the music video. Wish you a wonderful Holiday Season.

  8. Eikö ollutkin upea paikka! Kivaa, että pääsit sinne!

Hauskaa, että ovat myös koristaneet villaa jouluksi.

Tästä tuli yksi lempimuseoistani, kun kävin siellä. Pidin etenkin uuden osan arkkitehtuurista, sulavia, puhtaita linjoja.

Paljon siellä näytti olevan edelleen Schjerbeckin töitä, eivät siis kaikki todellakaan lainassa Atskissa.

Kiitos 💛
