About Finnish Elves

Today some elves and other decorations for you. Back in the good old days
the Finns believed in guardian spirits known as elves and each elf had his/her special area
to protect. There were house elves, sauna elves, mill elves, barn elves, cowshed elves and stall elves.
In return, these elves required little food, a right of residence or the last steam from the sauna.
The above tiny elves live on my spice shelf in the kitchen.

There exists even a book by Mauri Kunnas about our bygone elfin past.

I made this high chestnut cone about 20 years ago and it looks still brand new.
The beige Santa Claus looking guy is my House Elf.

My House Elf wanted to send one of his guardian elves to you, too
in order to guarantee you a peaceful & safe Christmas.
So grab yours! This edit is made from the above photo.

Me and my elves wish you happy Advent!

  2. In the North (Kakslauttenan) they had these house elves with black heads (and no faces). I wish I'd got one when we were there because when we went back south, there weren't any....I really liked those house elves...

    1. Oh, you have been at Kakslauttanen Lydia! Those elves looked certainly frightening as they had no face. It is lovely to think that some elf is protecting you, kidding of course :) I have one garden elf in our sauna, too. Greetings!

I just laughed at your elves, special cow barn.

    1. This kind of beliefs were for sure common in many countries in earlier times. In our folk belief traditions we have elves and many kinds of other spirits / gnomes with good or bad will. Hugs ♥

  10. These are beautiful figurines and every country has his or her superstition about them. A haltija (Haltia) (so I read) is a spirit, gnome or eleven -like creature in Finnish mythology that guards, helps, or protects something or someone. And I also took one and wanted to thank you and wish you safe and healthy days.
