The Weekend Roundup Y

 Starts with Y:
Hopefully this is Yucca and not Agave!

Tom’s choice Yellow & my favourite:
Iris pseudacorus is Yellow

 Starts with Y:
Yesterday we celebrated Midsummer Eve, a big celebration in Finland.
People have sauna at their summer cottages, eat & drink, and many have
hangover today. I don’t because I don’t drink :)

Starts with Y:
Our family dinner on Midsummer Eve was all very Yummy!

My son-in-law is chef and he made all the food - I was grateful & felt lazy!
We had new potatoes with herring & pickled raw salmon, filled mushrooms,
pork casserole and grandmom’s cucumbers. As dessert rhubarb pie with icecream
and coffee. I always forget to photograph the table when it still is pretty
- this is what was left!
Their two Tibetan terriers Arthur & Paul found a shadow under the table.

If you are interested look here how we Finns love to eat new potatoes & herring:
For many Finns, nothing is better than a very simple, yet tasty dish of boiled new potatoes
eaten with pickled herring, a pat of butter and a sprig of fresh dill.
A lot of care should be put in finding and buying fresh new potatoes of the highest quality.

  1. Oh...so cute Arthur and Paul and a shadow place under a table is always good for them. For sure hoping to get a snack, isn’t it?! Looks yummi and I’m glad to see and read that you have such a beautiful midsummer eve.

With the first plant I would say it could be a Agave too...a Agave attenuata. Yuccas have a trunk and grow straight up Agaven in the width and become altogether larger. So at least I know from my garden. To make sure you could feel it by the leaves. From the Agave they are thicker and more fleshy, from an Yucca they are thin. But, it doesn’t matter, a pretty picture-no-all of them and thanks for sharing.

Buen fin de semana y saludos, besitos y abrazos

  2. Ritta, I like your "Y's". Your Yellow Iris is sooo pretty, I have a can of cooked herring but I'm not sure how to eat it. I'm thinking a Herring sandwich with tarter sauce and lettuce. Maybe some Swiss cheese with the sandwich heated until the cheese softens???

  3. Happy Midsummer Riitta! I like your traditions and your special meal sounds great. My Northumberland mother used to enjoy herring in vinegar. Your mention triggered a memory. Midsummer is a special, magical time. All the best for your weekend and week ahead.

  4. Niin kaunis iiris! <3
Kyllä tuo on minusta Amerikan agaaveihin kuuluva kasvi, mutta ihan hyvin se sopii Y-kirjaimeenkin ainakin muotonsa perusteella. ;)
    Ihanaa keskikesää!

  5. Dear Riitta,
that looks really yummy. Obviously you had better weather than we had here in Austria for Midsummer, because you write "Their two Tibetan terriers Arthur & Paul found a shadow under the table." Here: No sun, no shadow... It was only nice and sunny here on June 13, that was lucky because we had dear guests. Before and after it was rainy and partly stormy, and today it is raining and cold. (I wore my quilted jacket on the way to the hardware store, and this is not common in our country in June ...)
By the way, the dogs are very cute :-) <3
    Hugs, Traude

  12. That Yucca is lovely and so nicely manicured - not like ours that are growing like crazy! That tablescape is great, lots of foods we don't know (pickled herring), but if we eat with our eyes as well, it all looks delicious!
