Artist of September - Martta Wendelin

Source of all Wendelin's illustrations - Alternative Finland
Martta Wendelin (1893-1986) was maybe the most famous media person of her time. She is known mainly for her illustrations in post cards, Christmas cards, magazine covers, book covers... Her art actually filled the Finnish visual world at that time.

The world Wendelin described is very idyllic - a paradise that does not exist in the real world. Men and women have clear roles. The women are usually 20-30 years old and they have max 3 children. The men are handsome lumberjacks or farmers. The life is happy and beautiful but modest. Small girls pick up flowers, the boys practise wilder things and skiing. The persons don't get old, there are no old people in the world of Wendelin.

Kotiliesi was the most popular women's magazine and
Wendelin illustrated its covers for years

We Finns love Wendelin's work. They are idyllic and nostalgic, they comfort us with their imaginary paradise. I found this great site - Alternative Finland - my photos except that one below are from that site. Please look her fascinating art!

Even today we can by her Christmas cards and calendars. She is so beloved, one of our iconic artists.

  13. Perhaps she was painting the world as she wanted it to be - that idyllic life appeals in so many ways, doesn't it? Life seems simpler. They are wonderful images. Happy weekend, Riitta.

  19. Five beautiful images indeed!! I love that you linked this post to Barbara too, I have learned so much about different artists from the links to her posts each month. These pictures remind me of the work of Tove Johansson (not sure if that is spelt correctly!) who is also Finnish. Thank you for joining in, have a great weekend! xx
