As Global Warming Proceeds...

The climate change & global warming are hot topics today.
NASA lists striking evidence on global warming. According to Nasa there are
several extreme effects that we have been witnessed this summer too:
for example record high temperatures & draught  in Central Europe.

I photographed these hot loving desert plants at Talvipuutarha / The Winter Garden of Helsinki.
Now all these agaves, cacti & other desert plants can survive in Finland
only in greenhouses. But who knows how much and how soon the climate gets warmer?
In recent dystopia literature the writers play among other things with these thoughts:

* Africa and southern parts of Europe turn too hot for people and animals to live.
* Potable water is a rare commodity.
* Due to the heat cattle breeding & cultivation of present plants becomes impossible.
* A famine arouses and drives masses of climate fugitives towards the North.

Of course this is fictional thinking. But who knows. The threat is obvious.
Perhaps in the distant future these plants can survive outdoors also in Finland?

There is a special wing for hot loving plants at The Winter Garden of Helsinki.

Sightseeing: Helsinki-Malmi Airport

I’ll share today a few photos of Helsinki-Malmi Airport.
The beautiful and extravagant round terminal represents pure functionalism
and was designed by architects Dag Englund and Vera Rosendahl. Malmi Airport
was opened solemnly in 1938. Until the opening of Helsinki-Vantaa Airport in 1952
it was the main airport of not only Helsinki but also Finland.

Today, the airport is still actively used in general aviation and flight training.
For a long time, the City of Helsinki has had plans to close the airport to use the area for
construction of new residential zones, but that decision has been debated and deferred
for many years. According to preliminary plans the round terminal would be conserved
but the airplane field would host new residential buildings.

My intention was to go and see National Aerobatic Championships at Malmi Airport
this weekend, but I arrived a few minutes too late. So no show for me,
but having a cup of coffee up in the restaurant was a nice experience.
PS
I wear glasses and have half long hair, but that lady is not me!

Outdoor planting was in our flag colours.

Friday Bliss #43 - Charming Scent

I have been working hard in the garden between rain showers.
It feels that the shovel and the harrow have grown as extensions in my hands :)
But all the borders and plants are in check - at least for a short moment.
The charming scent of  Philadelphus coronarius has made my work a bit lighter.

In the afternoons & evenings I have watched Wimbledon. So interesting - the tournament
has offered already a few surprises as many hot names were sent to chorus.
I’ll list a couple of names, more you can see HERE.
The Americans are going strong: Reilly Opelka beat Stan Wawrinka & Sam Querrey
Dominic Thiem (rank 4)! Astonishingly the Czech Jiri Vesely beat Alexander Zverev (rank 5)!

This young star has risen to the crème de la crème of tennis!
At only 18 years Felix Auger-Aliassime has reached the rank 21.
"A New Eminence For Canadian Tennis" - says essentiallysports.com

Wishing happy weekend!
