Friday Bliss #161 - Finnish Nightmares

Pocket Matti is a hilarious and funny short cartoon that sheds light on our strange Finnish sayings to a foreigner. First let me explain what Pocket Matti means: Matti is the Finnish equivalent for Matt & Matias. As a joint word Pocket Matti = taskumatti it means hip flask! On each page there is the chosen saying in Finnish, as well as its literal translation and the real meaning of the saying that seems crazy. If you think of English, which does not have the letters ä and ö, the following sayings seem funny even visually: Syöttää pajunköyttä, Äly hoi älä jätä, Tykätä kyttyrää & Pitkäpiimäinen. The book gets the reader in a good mood. There are over 90 sayings and I will take a few as examples:

SYÖTTÄÄ PAJUNKÖYTTÄ
To feed willow rope > To lie

ÄLY HOI ÄLÄ JÄTÄ
Hey, intelligence! Don't leave! > You are doing something incredibly stupid

TYKÄTÄ KYTTYRÄÄ
To like a hum? > To get offended, to dislike

PITKÄPIIMÄINEN
Long buttermilk > Very boring

HUKKA PERII
A wolf will inherit > To be in deep trouble

KISSANRISTIÄISET
Cat’s christening > An unimportant event

ÄIMÄN KÄKENÄ
To be a leather needle’s cuckoo > To be surprised

KARHUNPALVELUS
A bear’s favor > A favor that ends up being more bad than good

More than 60,000 Finnish Nightmares comics have been sold in Finland, and their translation rights have been sold to the United States, Japan, South Korea, Estonia and China. The Matti character in the books has even brought a new word Jingfen to the Chinese language, which means “mentally Finnish”.

Well, despite our odd language Finland is a wonderful small country.
I'll share with you an old Finland collage.

ART FOR THE WEEKEND
I just read a biography of Mary Gallen-Kallela, the spouse of Akseli Gallen-Kallela.
My rewiev is in Finnish but there is Google translator.
Mary & Akseli had an interesting life with travels in Europe, Africa and The US.
Mary was skillful pianist but rejnounced that career.

Krapu / Crab w 41 - Mielikuvittelua / Imagination

MIELIKUVITTELUA

Crab is a 100 word Finnish writing challenge.
Words for the week 41 are snatch, way, buzz.

IMAGINATION

The woman wades in a wet leafbed. It is drizzling and a brisk wind pushes her forward. Absolutely charming this Finnish autumn! In an open place, she turns her longing gaze to the sky. Thousands of cranes and geese on their way south - those wise and skillful.

Man thinks he is the center of the world, but doesn’t even know how to fly! The woman imagines flexible but strong wings on her back that would snatch her easily to the heights. She would join the bird swarms and plane with them above the clouds so that only buzz in the ears would be heard. From the heights she would watch the small life of small human ants. But she would be free and soon wherever she wanted.

Good imagination is a resource, not a disturbance. Even in excessive needed in the polar darkness?

Excursion to Hämeenlinna

Last Saturday we went to see our new kitten Siru to Hämeenlinna. It is a city and municipality of about 68,000 inhabitants in the heart of the historical province of Tavastia and the modern province of Kanta-Häme in the south of Finland. The distance from Helsinki is about 100 km. Hämeenlinna is the oldest inland city of Finland and was one of the most important Finnish cities until the 19th century.

It was a cloudy October day, pretty warm, no wind. We enjoyed the city views with colorful foliage
and old wooden houses. Siru was cute of course ❤︎ and we did some sightseeing too.

We visited the medieval Häme Castle...

... and the birth place of Jean Sibelius (1865-1957). It was a charming wooden townhouse
in Empire style, where Sibelius spent the three first years of his life.

... and The Palander House which presents the lifestyle of
a bourgeois Hämeenlinna family 100 years ago.
