Höstvisa - Autumn Song

Congratulations to the new hostess Angie! This is the 65th time I participate in MM,
the first time was in January 2016. In my post I was very happy about the snow we finally got.

The 6th of November we celebrate in Finland
Svenska Dagen - The Finnish Swedish Heritage Day
in honour of our Swedish speaking population. So here two great Swedish speaking ladies.

Tove Jansson (1914-2010), the mother of the Moomins is world renowned and beloved. She was a Finnish Swedish-speaking writer and artist.  This beautiful song that I am sharing is written by her and called in Swedish Höstvisa. The song dates back to 1965 and was rewarded with the third prize in a song contest arranged by the Finnish Broadcasting Company. Underneath there is a Youtube link to the Swedish version - please, follow the English text below. Moomins are a big business nowadays around the world, read more here.

We have many beloved Swedish speaking Finns. One was the famous actress Birgitta Ulfsson (1928-2017), whom I was lucky to see on stage at her 88 years. She interpreted Moomin characters in many plays and performances.  This is what I wrote in March 2017:

”But then the stage was taken by the gruff voice of Little My as Birgitta Ulfsson’s interpretation - in Finnish. What a charisma, what a takeover and the audience went nuts, like my blogger colleague Arja tweeted yesterday. This charming 88 year old lady has never ever fitted in a mold in her life. And she continues her performances both in Finland and in Sweden. ”

A few Finnish Moomin covers. The second from right was my favourite as a child.

AUTUMN SONG / HÖSTVISA

My journey home was long and slow through autumn leaves and frost
The days are growing shorter and colder
Come comfort me a little for I am so sad and lost
and suddenly I'm feeling much older
And never have I seen how the nighttime wins the day
I start thinking of my life and my mission
So many plans I had and so much I had to say
and so little did I bring to fruitition

Hurry, my darling, come hurry to love me
Waste not a moment of darkening day
Light our candles it's close to the evening
Last days of summer are slipping 'way

I'm looking for that feeling we once had that we have lost
A feeling you could help me to regain
The summer is too short and all too soon will come the frost
All too soon will come the cold and the rain
And maybe you'll come by 'ere the twilight turns to blue
to make everything the way it was before
And maybe we will think of some things for us to do
To make our gardens blossom once more

Hurry, my darling, come hurry to love me
Waste not a moment of darkening day
Light our candles it's close to the evening
Last days of summer are slipping 'way

The storm is blowing harder and I have to shut the door
I’m still thinking of you in this evening hour
I may be loving less than I used to love before
but you don't really know half my power
Staring at the beacons along the windy coast
Where ships endure the whitecaps and the weather
Now caring and sharing are things that matter most
In getting through these hard times together

Hurry, my darling, come hurry to love me
Waste not a moment of darkening day
Light our candles it's close to the evening
Last days of summer are slipping ’way

Red Energy!

I wish these strong reds shall give ENERGY
to all of us who are short of it in the mid of dark autumn days!

White Fragrance on All Saint’s Day

All Saint’s Day
means to me thinking of my beloved ones who have passed away.
So I’m thinking of my mother, father, in-laws, aunt... They all lived a good & long life
but passed away at very short intervals - all in two years.
It was a tough time but the sorrow is today behind
and warm memories are left. And gratitude.

White flowers
of my three huge Philadelphus coronarius go well to today’s peaceful theme.
Previous house owners had planted them and they grow in an odd way.
My husband tried to dig them away, but it was useless, not even a chain saw helped.
So they may bloom where they want and fill the garden with fragrance every July!

Edith Södergran (1892-1923)
was one of our beloved Swedish-speaking poets. Here my translations in English & German.

It is fall now, and the golden birds
all flying home
over blue water.
To say goodbye is hard, separation ahead,
but reunion
is certain.
...

Es ist Herbst, und die goldenen Vögel
alle fliegen nach Hause
über blauem Wasser.
Verabschieden ist hart, scheiden vorne,
aber Wiedersehen
ist sicher.

Pyhäinpäivä
on vainajien muistelun päivä.

edes moottorisaha auttanut - joten
kasvakoot ja kukkikoot siis siinä missä haluavat!

Edith Södergran
Nyt on syksy, ja kultaiset linnut
lentävät kaikki kotiin
sinisen veden yli.
Hyvästely on suuri, ero edessä,
mutta jälleennäkeminen
on varma.

Friday Bliss #8

If months were marked by colors,
November in New England - and in Finland! - would be colored gray.
- Madeleine M. Kunin

This November there seems to be nothing to say.
- Anne Sexton
...
As you can see from the above quotes autumn darkness has landed in Finland
and the lack of daylight starts to have its effect on my mood :)
It is definitely the time to start to use my Beurer daylight therapy lamp.
It really helps to overcome this fatigue!

November comes
And November goes,
With the last red berries
And the first white snows.

With night coming early,
And dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket
And frost by the gate.

The fires burn
And the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest
Until next spring.
- Clyde Watson

Wishing you a blessed All Saints’ Day! - Rauhaisaa pyhäinpäivää!
