Treasures from Helsinki

KLIPPAN
Luoto = Klippan in Swedish is a small island just outside Eteläsatama, the south harbour. In the wooden Art Nouveau villa from 1898 by architect Selim A. Lindqvist (1867-1939) is today the summer restaurant Saaristo, which is one of Helsinki's most imposing and traditional restaurants. The menu offers delicacies of the Scandinavian cuisine. During crayfish season, starting at the end of July, Saaristo is also one of the most popular venues in town for Finnish crayfish parties. Restaurant's historical milieu as well as central and beautiful location by the sea offer unique surroundings from romantic dinners to private parties of up to 500 persons. Photos from inside.

SUOMENLINNA FORTRESS
Suomenlinna / Viapori / Sveaborg is an inhabited sea fortress built on eight islands about 4 km southeast of the city center of Helsinki. Suomenlinna is a UNESCO World Heritage site that is popular with tourists and locals, who enjoy it as a picturesque picnic site.  The Swedish crown commenced the construction of the fortress in 1748 as protection against Russian expansionism (Finland was then part of Sweden). Last November I posted about Kekri Feast at Viapori.

STATUE OF PEACE
The origins of this sculpture are well explained by the text inscribed in it in Finnish, Swedish and Russian: This statue of peace was erected by the people of Finland as a symbol of the peaceful coexistence and friendship of Finland and the Soviet Union; April 6, 1968. Sculptor Essi Renvall (1911-1979) has said that the statue's female figure is the spirit of peace returning after a war with a new, peaceful heart. The bronze work is 5,35 metres high and its red granite pedestal 3 metres high.

Beautiful pines on Tähtitorninmäki / Observatory Hill.

  2. On kyllä mahtavaa päästä välillä kuvaamaan keskustaan, eikö totta!
Pitäisi varmaan itsekin joku päivä suunnata sinne.

    1. Oli harmaa aamu, mikä näkyy kuvissa. Mikähän siinä on, ettei Helsinkiä tule kuvattua - hienoja kohteita olisi.

  5. ...Riitta such a wonderful collection of treasures. The restaurant Saaristo would look at home in New York's Thousand Islands in the Saint Lawrence River! Thanks for joining the party, enjoy your week.

  10. Wow...that is actually too bad to be just a restaurant. I can also imagine a B&B there too. I would want to stay there overnight immediately. This is really a beautiful building and the location....it’s fantastic.

Interesting too all about the Suomenlinna Fortress and the Statue. Thanks for all the interesting information and for bringing us closer to your country. You know what....I’d love to make vacations ;-)

    Greetings and hugs to you

  15. The red house is surely unusual and very pretty to photograph! The history of the fortress is quite interesting, too.

Thanks for sharing your link at 'My Corner of the World' this week!
