I got this challenge from Kirsti and the theme is Learning about past mistakes.
The challenge was initiated by my namesake Riitta from the blog Garden Living.
Haaste kuuluu:
Kerro siis, mikä meni pieleen ja miksi? Esimerkkejä voi olla yksi tai useampia. Tärkeintä on kerätä huomioita, jotta tänä kesänä meillä menisi paremmin. Haasta kolme seuraajaa mukaan. Jätä vastauksestasi kommenttiin Puutarhaelon kadonneista oppia -haasteeseen, niin tiedän kerätä kaikki vinkit yhdeksi muistilistaksi.
My week point are Japanese maples. In the first photo you see the lime & gorgeous
Acer shirasawanum ’Aureum’. It lasted for two winters. When I dug it up the net surrounding
the roots was still there - it had not rotten at all. Maybe it was one reason and the other winter frosts.
I have also lost 3-4 purple leaved Japanese maples. The first years I grew them in pot,
but the stairs of my cellar are too difficult. When planted into the ground, they froze the first winter.
Japaninvaahterat vaativat Suomessa ehdottomasti suojaisen mikroilmaston
tai sitten talvetuksen kellarissa. Meillä tuulee liikaa, vähän päässä naapurissa punalehtinen japaninvaahtera viihtyy kadehdittavan hyvin!
In my post Ei mee ku Strömsössä (Finnish text!) from 2015 I wrote about
my disappeared clematis. Nothing like no-show phenomenon, they have really disappeared!
Among them are Multi Blue, Ville de Lyon, Diana, General Sikorski & Etoile Violette
- and there are probably more! I don’t dare to think about the money gone waste.
The main reason for poor success is that our soil is moraine / till and under it solid rock.
It is unsuitable for clematis. Even if it rains heavily the water disappears in an instant.
In addition I have not fertilized enough. Clematis need much water and fertilizers!
Sorry, I don’t have anybody to pass the challenge. Hope it is ok.
...there is a tentacy to try to grow things that are a bit too tender. Last fall I planted a Camellia, many of its leaves and flower buds were burnt over the winter, but I have 6 or 8 gorgeous pink blossoms.
VastaaPoistaCongratulations on your Camellia flowers! Throught the 20 years we have lived here I have tried so many plants that are too delicate for our climate.
PoistaOh, wonderful ,your Clematis are beautiful! Mine will take a few more days to stat flowering...
VastaaPoistaLove and hugs and a happy day, Claudia xo
These are not blooming now and never. I have lost these dear Claudia :)
PoistaMaking mistakes is the way we learn what works and what doesn't. Too bad about losing the Japanese maples and other plants. Our clematis is tangled with the lilac tree and I just leave it as it produces wonderful blooms and seems to like it.
VastaaPoistaMy pink Atragene climbs along the house ladders! It is high and thrives with no care.
PoistaVery interesting, and as Lorrie says: making mistakes is the way we learn. But we can enjoy when we are succesful.
VastaaPoistaThe joy is the greatest when there are previous failures!
PoistaA primeira fotografia é de uma grande beleza.
VastaaPoistaUm abraço e continuação de uma boa semana.

O prazer dos livros
Muchas gracias Francisco.
PoistaMy whole garden has been a case of learning from my mistakes, particularly because I knew what worked in the UK, in a colder climate, but not necessarily here. I am please to say it looks okay at the moment, though not nearly as spectacular as yours!
VastaaPoistaWell, my garden is pretty wild, but I am satisfied. To some extent garden work is therapeutic and of course good for the physics.
PoistaYo también he perdido muchas plantas, por no pensar en lo que necesitan. Un beso.
VastaaPoistaYour Clematis are beautiful! They actually love fertilizers and don't like being overdried. This year, spring is very cool and rainy.
VastaaPoistaHugs and greetings:)
The important thing is to learn from the mistakes made.
VastaaPoistaWonderful Clematis.
Hugs and all the best
