Early May at The Winter Garden in Helsinki

Last time I visited The Winter Garden of the City of Helsinki in February 2018, now I went to see how the awakening spring looks there. It is a gorgeous conservatory of cast-iron and glass and it's structure was designed to mimic the architecture of The Crystal Palace in London that was built for the Great Exhibition of 1851. Our Finnish Crystal Palace is situated on a low hill facing over The Gulf of Töölö towards the very centre of Helsinki.

There are beautiful plantings that shall be a great sight in the summer: a lot of roses and peonies!
I admired the gardeners’ skilful work with their precise eye & sharp scissors!

At the background you see a city district called Kallio - The Rocks.
It was build for workers and had a bad reputation. Nowadays it is very popular for
urban professionals and the prices of apartments have risen.
I lived there in the 90's.

The chamber choir where my son is singing - Addictio - was not rewarded in Cork Choral Festival
But they were very satisfied with their Cork-visit.  He sent me a few photos from Dublin
- Famine statues, Library of Trinity College & Brian Boru's Harp. Click here to my post.

    1. Yes, I was inside its jungle, too. I'll show photos later, because I try to avoid too long posts... Happy new week Erica!

    1. Thank you Eileen. The progress of spring is very slow this year because the weather turned very cold.

What do you mean by a bad reputation?

    1. Hi Sandi,

Kallio, The Rocks used to be a very restless neighbourhood with a lot of drunken people or alcoholics, prostitutes and street fights. It is still a bit restless with those phenomenons I mentioned, but nowadays much more safe and calm. I lived there for 10 years and never had any problems walking on the streets alone, also at night time.

  7. The conservation building looks very large and beautiful! The shrub in front is also large and well shaped. Congratulatios to your son and fellow choral singers for a good performance!

  9. Riitta - In these photos, I like that you can still see the "bones" of the trees, with the hint of green at the fringes. Heavenly! Thanks for sharing this wonderful site in Helsinki with Mosaic Monday!

    1. I like also 'leaveless' seasons when the structure of the trees can be seen. In Helsinki we have a lot of old lindens that look artistic without leaves.

  16. Talvipuutarha ja sen tilukset kyllä houkuttaa valokuvaamaan - liian harvoin tulee käytyä, josko tämän kesän aikana.
