Vanhakirkko Park, also known as Ruttopuisto Park, is located in the center of Helsinki. The name Ruttopuisto comes from the fact that on the spot there used to be a cemetery where victims of the 1710 plague epidemic were buried. In summer, the park is lush and cozy, now of course bare and wintery. In Vanhakirkko Park people spend time among the tombstones as in any park. With the exception of the soldiers killed in the civil war in Finland and Estonia, no people have been buried in the park since 1829. 48 tombstones from 1790 - 1829 are preserved in the park.
The park is home to Vanhakirkko = Old Church, which was inaugurated in 1826
and is the second oldest church in Helsinki. The architect was German Carl Ludwig Engel.

The church is beautiful inside and has about 1,200 seats.
It is a very popular church for baptisms and weddings. Photo online.

...Riitta, history certainly goes back further for you than it does here. The interior of the church is similar to some that I have seen here. Enjoy your week.
VastaaPoistaUutta tietoa mulle, kiitti ku jaoit! :)

Liebe Riitta,

Jutta

Ihana <3
PoistaDear Riitaa,
VastaaPoistaI love a Walk at Cementarys. Thank you for the view in the Church,
Greetings
Kirsi
The wedding photo is beautiful!
VastaaPoistaDear Riitta,
VastaaPoistasuch a beautiful park, a memorial, in the middle of the city. It looks beautiful. A place where you can stop and rest.
Best regards

A lot of poignant history at this location. Whenever I see images of Helsinki it always seems like a very liable city somehow.
VastaaPoistaIndeed, the interior of the church is bright and beautiful and provides the right setting for celebrations. The old tombstones are beautiful and fit this place!
Dear Riita,
VastaaPoistathank you for your comment on my Helsinki posting! Yes, the trip took place in September and the weather was (relatively) friendly. Too bad the stay in Helsinki was so short, I would have liked to see more of the city. Unfortunately we didn't see the Vanhakirkko Park and the beautiful old church. But that's the way it is on such trips - you get a short impression, that's all. I was nevertheless happy to step on Finnish soil again after such a long time and we enjoyed the day very much.
Have a nice evening

Hi Traude,
PoistaYes, there is a lot to see in Helsinki. But it is always so that during a short visit you have to choose. Happy weekend.
What a gorgeous place! Thanks for sharing this church with us :)
VastaaPoistaI'm so glad you are a part of 'My Corner of the World' this week!

The cemetery is beautiful and poignant. The snow fall effect looks even more perfect with those pictures. It adds to the sense of serenity and quiet of the old graves. A lovely post.
VastaaPoistaA beautiful place full of memories
VastaaPoistaInteresante. Un beso.
