Tomorrow we celebrate both the All Saints Day and Finnish Swedish Heritage Day.
Sweden-Finland / Sverige-Finland is a term developed in Finnish historiography afterwards
to describe the kingdom that included most of present-day Sweden and most of present-day
Finland from the 13th century to 1808. Most of the Finnish upper class were Swedish speaking
in the 19th century and today about 5 % of the people are Swedish speaking.
The neoclassical church of Askainen was built by the owner of Louhisaari Manor, Governor-general Herman Claes'son Fleming in 1653 as the chapel church of Louhisaari Manor. It’s one of the rare stone churches in Finland built after the Reformation in the 17th century. There is a funeral chapel of the Mannerheim family in the cemetery. In 2009, the Finnish Heritage Agency defined Louhisaari Manor and Askainen Church as one of Finland's nationally significant built cultural environments.
The church's shingle roofing is interesting, a Dutch-style or curved saddle roof.
The ridge of the roof has three decorative crosses with pennant at the top.
The beautiful bell tower was erected in 1772–1779.
The church was closed but I found these two interior photos from the Finnish Wikipedia.
The old cemetery was calm and unadorned.
See my post about the Louhisaari Manor.
on the Saturday during the period between 31 October and 6 November.
We have a habit of taking candles and wreaths to the graves.
The bell tower is beautiful indeed. It is so well preserved too. Finnish Swedish Heritage day is such a wonderful thing. I love it! Do you have any festivities or activities that share the heritage of each or both countries?

Swedish Day / Svenska Dagen is a common flag day and honors the BILINGUAL Finland. Swedish Day, actually an entire week, is celebrated with festive celebrities in many cities, especially in Swedish speaking coastal areas. This year, the main festival will be held in Mariehamn and will be broadcasted and televised. In Swedish schools, the celebration includes a native language song, or Modersmålets sång.
PoistaI personally don't celebrate it in any way, as I am Finnish speaking. But I think that this is a great tradition, because there were hard disputes about the language question throughout our history.
Guten Morgen Riita,
Thank you for your comment Eva. The church in Askainen, Masku was beautiful to me, peaceful and unadorned.
PoistaBeautiful bell tower. Nice and peaceful. Here All Souls Day is celebrated on Tuesday, 2nd Nov, 2021.
VastaaPoistaYes, very peaceful church & cemetery.
PoistaWhat a beautiful church...simple but still impressive. I love the bell tower, a beautiful contrast with the wood to the rest of the church. Interesting to read how it was with the language. Did’nt know before. Over here All Saints Day was also on the first of November, a very quiet day, but good this year for a long weekend.
VastaaPoistaFor you a peaceful All Saints Day with hopefully nice weather.
Hugs and greetings
Nova
Thanks Nova. You see, Finland belonged to Sweden for centuries. From the late 1800 there began a strong movement to improve the status of the Finnish language. Today, in the schools, it is obligatory to study Swedish and some people oppose this. Mostly our two language groups are in peace today.
PoistaIt is going to rain today & tomorrow, but I don't mind. I have so many house & other projects going on. Have nice day.

❤️lich
Astrid
Vielen Dank Astrid für deine warmen Worte.
PoistaHi Riitta,
VastaaPoistathe Church is wonderful, thank you for all the great pictures and view inside and arround!
Wishing you a lovely and relaxed weekend!
Love and hugs, Claudia xo
Thank you Claudi. The church is simply decorated, very solemn.
PoistaHienoja kuvia kirkosta ja hautausmaalta, minua kiehtovat vanhat, runsaasti koristellut ristit, mukaan lukien kirkon katolla oleva. Toivotan sinulle hyvää lomaa. Meillä on festivaali 1.11. sitoutunut.
VastaaPoistaLuulen, että kaunis syksy on täällä ohi, ulkona sataa ja tuuli puhaltaa puista kaikki lehdet ... kylmää, märkää, harmaata ... Aikaa sisälle ... ompelukoneelle, kirjoille, kalvoille ja mukavalle ruoanlaittoa... ja sitten alan odottaa lunta ja suksia, ehkä tammikuussa täällä meillä??? :-)))

The old iron crosses are really beautiful. The autumn has arrived with rain & cool weather here, too.
Poista...a beautiful spot to visit.
VastaaPoistaI always visit churches on my trips.
PoistaLove both churches because of their simplicity:) Always fun to know of countries history and customs. So, do you speak both Swedish and Finnish? (and apparently you understand German and English) - wow Riitta, you have a lot of knowledge inside you:):) Enjoy your weekend! Emille
VastaaPoistaThank you Jesh :) Yes, I learned English, Swedish, German and French at school. French I have forgotten. Later I studied Spanish. No one knows Finnish abroad, that is why we have to study so many languages!
PoistaBeautiful photos! Have a good weekend.
VastaaPoistaWarm weekend greetings to you too Linda.
PoistaThe post is interesting! You've captured the beautiful church and its peaceful surroundings quite well.
VastaaPoistaDearest Riitta,
VastaaPoistathis is a very beautiful old church inside and out, and the bell tower is especially lovely. I also like the plain old cemetery!
All the best
