Friday Bliss #20 - My Winter Week

The beginning of this week was extremely cold, yet so beautiful. On Tuesday there was a long time record - 33 C in Vihti, a community in southern Finland. Around my home the temperatures have stayed above & under -20 C, so I have stayed mainly indoors. Then it got warmer with heavy snow fall. Exactly a year ago I asked: Is it possible to get buried in the snow? Now my feelings and the views around my home are the same!

As a fun contrast I have watched the Australian Open & some serious sweating in the + 40 C of Melbourne. I don’t have any specific favourite but love the new young names: Frances Tiafoe, Nick Kyrgios, Denis Shapovalov & Stefanos Tsitsipas who got to the semi final. Of course I’m happy with the success of Henri Kontinen & John Peers who got to the final, as well as Lucas Pouille who is half Finnish, half French. But I bet that Nadal meets Djocovic in the Sunday’s final!

My reading this week has been The Three Evangelists of the French Fred Vargas. This is the first of the trilogy, and it seems that two are available in English. I so love the humour of Vargas. Her detective stories with the charming & odd inspector Adamsberg are so, so entertaining - and not too cruel!

Cold & Sunny Helsinki ❤︎

I’m very lazy in photographing Helsinki - maybe it is too familiar to me...

But today it is a stunning winter day: full sunshine, clear blue sky and - 20C.

I have to share you these _very_ quick mobile shots (I was sitting in the car).

The beautiful Eastern Orthodox Uspenski Cathedral

- beside a modern office block of Stora Enso, a pulp, paper etc. producing company.

The huge office building is designed by the great Alvar Aalto and built in the 60’s.

The Helsinki market place at the background, today empty due to the cold.

But the tourists don’t mind...

Along The Kaivopuisto Park you can admire The Gulf of Finland in its winter beauty.

Underneath a memorial to seafarers and those who died in the sea

by the sculptor Oskari Jauhiainen & Eero Eerikäinen from 1968.

Maybe to these beautiful winter scenes the voice of Tarja Turunen is appropriate.

This former vocalist of the Finnish heavy metal band Nightwish has a stunning voice!

My January was blue and white with a bit of pink.

My Walking Routes

 In the middle of this white winter world, maybe one can remember summer!
At about 15 minutes drive from my home I can go to a kind of wilderness.

The Kuusijärvi - Spruce Lake recreational area is very popular with good paths, beach,

sauna, beautiful lake and lovely old trees. Here a few glimpses from earlier summers.

Even our outdoor girl Sissi loves to walk there.

I bought this huge lantern before Christmas, and it certainly comes in need.

It is on a table where Sissi takes her nap - and is sometimes furious scratching

because the flowers are behind glass out of her reach.

The Sun Makes All the Difference

The winter can be beautiful too. Today we have a fantastic winter day: 

blue sky, pure snow, sunshine and about -6 C.

It’s better to enjoy this because tomorrow a terrible snow storm shall

sweep over the southern Finland. It is forecast 20 cm new snow!

I wonder why the birds don’t eat the abundant rosehips of Rosa glauca...

I wish I were on my way somewhere, too...
