IT HAS BEEN A LOT OF ATHLETICS FROM MUNICH LAST WEEK.
That is why I want to say a few words about two iconic gold medal winners.
Every senior Finnish citizen remembers Lasse Virén’s long-distance runs and gold medals
from the 1972 Summer Olympics of Munich. His 10,000 m run is iconic!
He won with a new world record time of 27:38.4 - after falling down in the middle of the run!
Virén immediately got up, reached the front group and stayed there and started
his final spurt 600 meters before the finish line. See on Youtube.
Virén won his second gold medal in the 5,000 meters
with an Olympic record time of 13:26.4.
AND NOW TO THE EUROPEAN CHAMPIONSHIPS IN MUNICH LAST WEEK.
Since the ’golden years’ of the Finnish athletics medals have been sparse.
But what did the 24-years old Wilma Murto do. Six years after she set the World Junior Record,
Wilma soared over a massive National Record (NR) of 4.85m - three times! -
to win the women's Pole Vault at the European Championships! She equalled the CR
set by Katerina Stefanidi who finished 2nd with 4.75m. The 24-year-old Murto's success
marks the first time Finland has won a European championship gold medal in eight years
and the first Finnish pole vault medal in 44 years.
"My dreams have come true. I knew it had been in me for a long time
but I just needed this day to come," Murto said. "This is like the start of a new era for me.
I have struggled after my teenage success and now I finally made it to the senior level.”
She is very beautiful too. Congrats!
