Friday Bliss #179 - Kustavi Church

I have still some summer 2021 memories to share. The Kustavi Church is a wooden towerless church, built by Johan Höckert in 1783. It was built on the site of the previous church that was burnt.  Inside there is a wooden vaulted ceiling, the outer roof is shingled and the church has seating for 480 people. The two-part altarpiece Holy Communion and the Crucifixion was painted by Jonas Bergman in 1744, the pulpit is from the 17th century. The church has been repaired several times. The Kustavi Church with its surroundings is one of Finland's nationally significant built cultural environments.

Votive ships have been donated, for example, in accordance with the promises
made to God in a maritime distress. The tradition was strongest in coastal areas.
About half of the more than 200  votive ships that have been or are in Finnish churches
date back to the 17th and 18th centuries.

A separate bell tower was moved to the church from the village of Kunnarainen in 1793.

The soldiers’ cemetery was very beautiful with a monument  Those who wait on the shore
by Jussi Vikainen from 1954.

  1. Guten Morgen Riita,

    2. In the coastal areas most men used to be fishers and the wife and children were afraid and hoped the men returned safe from the sea. Looking forward to your post. Warm greetings.

    1. In Finland, in the coastal areas, the most churches are simple and out of wood.

  3. It's a beautiful church! I liked the sculpture of those who wait, lump-in-the-throat inducing.

  4. First of all, I hope it’s okay for you if I link this post to my bell tower project. It belongs so it ;-))

A beautiful church, even it is so simple, but it has such beautiful things like the cross, the organ and the painting. Also I like the tradition and even that they build a bell tower in form of a lighthouse.

Thanks for sharing with us, I liked it.

Wishing you a sunny and bright weeekend too and sending greetings and hugs to you

    1. Thank you Nova. Of course you can link my post to your bell tower project, so nice of you. It was a sunny but chilly day in Kustavi. I always love to visit the old graveyards.

Wishing a sunny weekend to you!

    1. You would not expect a church and belltower to be red. Perhaps it is some tradition in the coastal aread that comes from Sweden. This is the only red church I have seen.

  8. Dearest Riitta,
this old church is beautiful. It looks very different from the churches I know - light, woody, natural - and then with the separate bell tower, just adorable!
All the best and have a nice weekend,

  11. Was about to ask about the ship in front of the organ when I read your text! That is a great way to combine prayers with showing a beautiful ship (one of my favorite subjects!). May not make it next week because my computer is in the shop, and now I'm typing on an old unsupported one that does not do "paste" that is needed to make the hyperlink for the post. Have a great weekend!

  13. That's quite sad, the soldier's crosses. Also wanted to say well done in the Olympics. You've earned quite a swag of medals. I LOVED the guy that waited for the guy who came last to finish before celebrating. What a legend he is.

    1. Thank you Lydia for the congratulations. We still have icehockey on Sunday, either gold or silver.

The guy you ment is Iivo Niskanen, our biggest skiing star at the moment. His sister Kerttu is good skier too and the other sister is famous fashion designer here in Finland. The talented Niskanen sisters.

    1. On the coastal areas there were these ships, because there were many ship wrecks among the fishermen.

  18. Thank you for sharing this church with us, Riitta. It's beautiful. The votive ship is lovely, and I'm glad you included the explanation of it. The graveyard with the statue of the woman and child waiting is very touching - if only human beings would learn how useless and terrible war is.
