Sightseeing: Luomus

This elephant welcomes the visitor in the lobby.
Grandchild & his parents were on holiday, so we did sightseeing in Helsinki.

Lapsenlapsi vanhempineen oli lomalla ja katseltiin paljonkin pääkaupunkia.

Natural History Museum - LUOMUS is located in Etu-Töölö, very near to the center of Helsinki.
The decorative building of neobaroque used to be a Russian boy's gymnasium in 1913-1917
when we belonged to Russia as Grand Duchy of Finland.
Neobaroque style was uncommon for turn-of-the-century Russian constructions
and is rare in Helsinki. Perhaps it was for this reason, that the building was preserved
during the tumultuous early years of our independence, unlike many other buildings
that were reminiscent of Russian rule.

In 2005 the entire museum building was emptied and closed from the public
for nearly three years. The basis of the complete renovation was to conserve the building
and “to peel out” the original flamboyance of the premises. I have not visited the museum
after the renovation, so my astonishment was great.  Luomus is fantastic and
an endless source of information! The museum was filled with families, and indeed,
it offers kids a near perspective to the nature and also an insight to climate change
& what to do to prevent it.

Skeletons, stuffed animals, large showcases where animals
are in their natural environment... Knowledge about climate change, birds,
mammals, insects, prehistoric animals ... You name it!

EPILOGUE
You have traveled with this exhibition for billions of years from the wonderful starters
of life to today's Finnish landscape. You have seen brief glimpses of incredible strides
in the history of life that have been filled with shocking upheavals,
constant change and unexpected twists.

The whole globe and its diverse life is full of memories of the past.
Life history research constantly adds new, more accurate information about life's development
and changes on the planet. In the light of new information,
old results and perceptions are always reassessed - science checks and corrects itself.

  1. ...a beautiful place, but I've not sure that I want to be welcomed by a stuffed elephant though! It sure took a long time to create our wonderful world. Thank Riitta for sharing, I hope that you have a wonderful weekend.

  2. What a beautiful museum exhibition, so much to see and learn. I always miss the natural history museum in London. That huge dragonfly is breathtaking. Thanks for your kind comment on my blog. It is indeed much too hot here. The Rhine is not as bad as it was last year when we had no rain for 4 months, but it is still much too low and too warm, and in a lot of lakes and rivers the poor fish are dead. We are all faced with huge climatic problems. Have a great weekend, hugs, Valerie

    1. Hi Valerie,

I have read some dystopia literature on climate change and global warming were masses of climate refugees start to Wanderer towards the north - because it has come too hot for people & animals to live. A terrible vision.

  3. It is somehow disturbing that the elephant ended up there. It's real, right, and stuffed? Macabre.

    1. Sorry you got disturbed Sandi. I don't know wether the elephant is real or not. There are a lot of fake skeletons (dinosaurs, man), maybe some stuffed animals are fake too. I don't know what is the museum's policy in acquiring these animals. I want to believe that they have been deadly injured and not killed on purpose for this aim.

    2. I read on the museum's site that most of the stuffed animals have been found dead in the nature or died in a zoo.

  11. Kids do love dinosaur bones. When I was a teacher we would go to the Museum of Natural History in Los Angeles by bus. They also enjoyed stopping for a picnic lunch outdoors on the lawn after the tour. - Margy

  15. Riitta - what an astonishing architectural gem! So glad that it was preserved. And it seems entirely appropriate that it should become a museum. I love to see families in places like this, learning and experiencing together. Thanks for sharing with Mosaic Monday!

  16. Tutustumisen arvoinen paikka/näyttely. Nyt harmittaa, ettei meidän Hesa-päivinä satanut. Te toteutitte meidän lasten laatimaa Sadepäivän varalle-ohjelmaa.
